Hi I need to translate Word files with the extension either docx or doc extension

Hi eveyone,

I do not know what's going on

I want to transate either two files in .doc extension or .docx extension and I get this weird message saying pre-scanning failed to identify the file. Then a second message saying Pre-sacnning error the file you are opening does not contain any bilingual segment. when I look at the file types I see that the .doc and .docx are associated with SLD Trados Translator's Workbench documents, that is supposed to be some bilingual files.

All I want is to translate regular Word files, what is going on ?

    Hello ,

    Old time Workbench users often handle DOC(X) files that contain the tw4winmark style and this style tells Studio the file is bilingual (as in the old bilingual DOC). But if it's not then there won't be any bilingual segments. So just use the setting in your filetype to "Process files with tw4winmark style" in your "Common" settings.

    Hi Paul:
    I have another instance of STUDIO 2017 running and I have a file type Word 2007-2016 associated to docx and doc not this Old time Workbench on my old computer,
    is there any way I can export this file type and put in on my new computer? Or reset the file type?
    I have downloaded again SR1 plus updates but to no effect on the new computer, this Word 2007-2016 would not come up.
    I did put your suggestion on the common file definition of Word 2003-2007 and I will test it.
    I must have done something wrong since I do not have this file type on the new computer.
    Any suggestion is welcome.

    Hi  

    I think you're still not seeing the knub of the problem here.  If the message you get refers you to the bilingual word filetype then this is only because of the content in the Word file, the tw4winmark style.  If you open the wordfile and look at the styles you'll probably find they are in there.  This doesn't mean the file is bilingual at all, but these styles were used for bilingual files and as Studio works by automatically trying to determine the filetype rather than you telling it what to use first, this style is causing Studio to try and use the bilingual wordfietype.

    If you look in your filetype settings you'll see the bilingual workbench filetype like this:

    Note that it opens DOC and DOCX files.  But it's also lower in the list so these ones are always prioritised first:

    So when you open a file Studio looks at the DOC or DOCX with these in mind.  But if this setting in Common, in either of the filetypes is not checked, and if the DOC or DOCX contains the tw4winmark style then the Bilingual Workbench filetype will be used instead:

    If you check this box then your files will still be handled with the standard DOC or DOCX filetype.  Does this help to make more sense for you and show you what needs to be done in the settings?

    Hi Paul,

    I know I am thick. But I undestood you the first time (I think...)

    what I am trying to say is that when I list the file type, the one Microsoft Word 2007-2016 is NOT in the list:

    it goes form Microsoft Word 2000-2003 .doc and .dot

    and the next type that I would expect to be Microsoft Word 2007-1016 is not there. I will as per you suggestion check the .doc file to see if the nasty tw4winmark style is in there.

    What I do not understand is where is my file type Microsoft Word 2007-1016 gone?
