Non-breaking spaces in Trados Studio 2017

I have a puzzling problem. I’m working in Trados Studio 2017 after pre-translation. I have two dates one above the other. I change the first one to French format with non-breaking spaces between the date and the month and between the month and the year. I click on Ctrl-Shift-Enter but it doesn’t insert the non-breaking spaces in the date in the next segment. I then insert the non-breaking spaces in the date in the next segment manually and press Ctrl-Shift-Enter but then the non-breaking spaces disappear from the date in the previous segment. The original document is in Word 2013 and the dates appear in a table. How can I prevent  Studio from removing the non-breaking spaces? The screenshots show the dates in Studio 2017 and in the original Word document.

  • Hi,

    Go to:

Project settings > Language Pairs > [your language pair] > Translations Memory and Automated Translation > Auto-substitution > Mesaurements

and ensure you've checked the second option: Use the same spacing between the number and the unit is used in the transmation memory target segment

I think this might be the solution.

  • Thanks Jesús but I tried your proposed solution and I still have the same problem.
  • I am facing the same problem and my choice in the Project Settings is to always use non-breaking space. A workaround for now is after all segments are confirmed I filter the segments with numbers, disable auto-propagation and execute a search/replace in order to substitute simple spaces with non-breaking space. But it is very annoying.

Maybe someone has a better solution.

    Best regards,

  • Hi ,

This thread was mentioned today so I spent a little time playing with this. The problem is that Studio uses the data format in your operating system for auto-substitution. Since the dates are recognised tokens this will take precedence over any changes you make to in your TM. So the only workaround I know of is the one you have already found and that is to let Studio do what it wants, to make sure the date conversions are correct, and then run a search and replace across your project afterwards and change the spaces to non-breaking spaces.

Not too difficult a task, but it is an additional step you'll have to take f you want this solution. I did have a play with the regional settings in windows and tried to add non-breaking spaces into the d mmm yyyy option but I'm not sure whether windows really takes this information since spaces can't seen in this location and I can't tell.
