Removing italics in target segment when source segment is completely in italics

Dear all,

As always, I'm sorry if someone already asked about this, but I spent some time looking through the forum and couldn't find the answer.

My question is simple: If I have a source segment completely in italics (I cannot see any tags on the segment), how can I change the format of a specific word in the target segment?

See this example:

Is there any way to remove the italics on "paper"?

Thanks!

Damián

  • Hi ,

Depends on the type of file it is. Not all filetypes will support you doing things like that. But if it's a word file just select the word and use the normal word shortcuts... or the shortcuts in the ribbon.

You can't remove italics from the entire segment as these have been moved outside the segment so you don't have to deal with them. Although you may find them if you display all the content using the display filter and you may be able to remove them that way.

  • Thank you for your answer, Paul.
I'm afraid there's no Word shortcut for applying normal text that I know of. In Word, if a part of the text is in italics, you just hit Ctrl+I and the italics is removed. In the example above, I cannot do that in Trados. But I didn't know there was a shortcut in Trados's ribbon to apply normal text to a word in italics in a segment completely in italics. Where can I find it? That would solve my problem with this Word file.
Nonetheless, thanks for letting me know there's another way with the Display filter. The problem is that I have to remove the format for the whole paragraph (font type and italics) to then re-apply italics to everything but the word that doesn't need italics ("paper"). But for now I think it'll work.
    Thanks again!

I've led you up the garden path here. You cannot do that unfortunately.  Even if you do it in word if you look at the tags in Studio afterwards the action is actually performed by making everything apart from the text you want to be in italics.  So this:

Would become this if you highlighted the words "the italics" and pressed Ctrl+I:

Based on this flimsy investigation there doesn't seem to be a tag for normal text.  Studio isn't supposed to be a word processor so I think this action would be very complex to achieve.  Interesting though... odd I've never come across this before.

  • Thank you again for your answer, Paul.
I don't know if this is the case for other languages, but in Spanish if you're using a word from another language into your text, you should write it in italics. That's the norm. Now, if the whole text is in italics, you need to write the word in normal text since you need to make it stand out.
I've been testing the option of deleting the tags that are outside the segment, but it's too complicated because, as you know, the tags also include font type, size, and other formatting in addition to italics. So I'll stick to changing from italics to normal text after exporting the translation.
    Thanks a bunch!

  • I know I am replying to this conversation many months late, but I had this issue and I just discovered how to do it.

In Editior view, select the text you want to remove the italics. Then, under the "Home" tab, go to the QuickInsert section and click on the little button on the bottom right corner of the section.

When the Insert Tag window appears, all you have left to do is lelect "No Italics" to force the italics off by inserting the appropriate tag. No need to wait to generate the file anymore!

  • Thanks from me too! So easy when you know how.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you :) You just made my day!

  • Hi Paul,

I recently bought Studio 2021 and am having a similar problem: I'm translating a long German lawsuit that involves in a trial in England so it's full of millions of individual English terms, all of which are italicized in the original and none of which should be italicized in the English translation..Unlike the previous versions of Studio, I can't just use Remove formatting or Ctrl+i to get rid of them. I'm also unable to display the formatting tags so I can't remove the formatting tags that are the "culprits". Often just one single italicized word in the original will convert the entire target section to iitalics! Also when I try to overtype the first word in the segment everything appears in italics so I have to start overtyping in the middle of the first to avoid the invisible tags. I'm having the same problem with unwanted highlighting. This is a very serious problem since I'm  supposed to deliver perfectly formatted sdlxliff files. I suspect the idea is to simplify things for beginners somehow but it's really a giant step backwards. Can you please tell me how to get rid of the unwanted formatting?

  • The most easy way will be to open the file in Word, run a search and replace for italics and replace it with no italics.

Otherwise go to File -> Options -> Editor and chose to display only tags, no formatting. To remove existing formatting from a target segment, press CTRL+A and CTRL+Space bar. It does the same as in Word, all formatting will be resetted to what is in the style.

  • Hello William,

This happens when Studio leaves out the formatting tags for all-italics segment.

I am not on Studio 2021, but I strongly suggest you follow these instructions (as I already posted here 3 years ago) :

In Editior view, select the text you want to remove the italics. Then, under the "Home" tab, go to the QuickInsert section and click on the little button on the bottom right corner of the section.

When the Insert Tag window appears, all you have left to do is select "No Italics" to force the italics off by inserting the appropriate tag.

Let me know if it works!
