Build translation model: yes or no?

Hi there.

The translation memory settings in Studio 2017 seem to give contradicatory recommendations. On the one hand, it recommends building a translation memory because a significant amount of translations have been added to the TM since the last date shown. (This particular TM has about 3500 units.) However, when I click on the Build Translation Model button, a message comes up advising against building the model before it has at least 5000 units. I was just curious about this.

Any thoughts anyone?

  • Hi

The recommended minimum is 5000 to ensure a sensible model can be created.  But if I create a new TM with 3500 TUs...ish and then switch on fragment matching in the TM settings I get this message first:

    So I click "Yes".

Note that the translation model has been built.  I now see this:

So there is no need to build the model at all.  But if I decide to do it anyway then I can do, and I am presented with the message you have seen:

I would agree this last part is a little confusing (  ) as it went ahead at the start and built the model and aligned the TUs even though there was only 3438 TUs.  Ignoring the confusing messages I believe that all this is doing is preparing the TM to the same stage you would be at if you had interactively translated all 3438 TUs rather than importing them, or upgrading from an older version of Studio.

I would treat this is information and take it that for the best results you need to have at least 5000 TUs in your Translation Memory.  But even if you don't we still allow you to make a start and whilst it's not optimal you will still start to get useful results.
