Upgrading TMs leads to huge increase in file size - any remedies?

Question

We have upgraded quite a large TM to Studio 2017 and experience a file size gain of more than 100% (800 MB to about 2 GB). Is this expected behavior? Why does the upgrade lead to such a jump in file size? Is there any way to avoid this file size gain?

This is expected behaviour. It's because the upgrade routine has built a translation model, extracted words and phrases and then aligned them... all for fragment matching. This additional information is stored in the TM.
