Removing the TM lookup delay?

Something which is increasingly bothering me is the delay in the TM lookup results (translation results), when proceeding to the next segment. Is there a way to speed this lookup up or, preferably, make Studio buffer the lookup for the next few untranslated segments in advance?

The delay is more of an issue when the segments to be translated only need replacement of a few words and when using large server based TMs - which happen to be my current situation. I'm translating a lot of segments right now where I just need to change a product name or an adjective. Something I could do in an instant if the TM results were there (in that same instant), guiding me to that single word or two needing replacement and ensuring me that that was the only change needed. Right now it seems I have to wait a few seconds every time.

If it's not possible, I hope SDL would consider implementing that feature in future versions.

  • Install SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1, where Look Ahead is newly introduced. The exact purpose of Look Ahead is to speed up the way you are asking for. It buffers lookup results for next few segments.
Or use smaller TMs (project TMs), located necessarily on your local HDD, preferably a SSD.
In any case, if your hardware is older than 3 years and never has been very powerful, it is time to upgrade the hardware too. Unfortunately older and weaker hardware causes huge performance problems.
