Best way to remove reps from spreadsheet so the translators only see the non reps.

I think I've got a way to do this but I want to check if there's not an easier method.

Here's what I'm trying to do. My client has given me a great big spreadsheet containing about 50 % reps.

I want to be able to produce a smaller spreadsheet not including the reps to give to the translators, that way they can use whatever software they wish and return the files to me in excel.

So in other words, anything that is repeated needs to be removed.

What I'm currently planning is to use the Analyze function under Batch tasks, then extract anything with more than 1 instance. Then get them to translate that, and finally pre-translate the entire project, and that should fill the whole thing out? Am I correct?

The only problem is that my convert sdlxliff to excel function has never worked properly so I'll have to work out what's wrong with that, but anyway this topic is just about deciding the best workflow.

Thanks,
David

  • Hi ,

It would help to know what version of Studio you are running but there a number of options.

    Option #1
    - Create an sdlxliff containing only the repetitions using "Export frequent segments".
    - Translate the sdlxliff first
    - Pretranslate your project
    - Lock all the segments that have been translated
    - Send out the sdlxliff files for translation so translators ignore the locked segments
    - get the sdlxliff files back, check and save the targets

    Option #2
    - if the source excel is a simple list then remove the duplicates in excel
    - send out the excel files with no duplicates for translation
    - update your TM with a TM from your translators (TMX should be possible in any CAT)
    - pretranslate the original source files, check and save the targets

    Option #3
    - as you have described, but use the Export to Excel batch task on the appstore if you have problems with the legacy converter, OR
    - use the Export for Bilingual Review built into Studio so that the edited files are in Word instead
    - Update your translations using the Update from Bilingual Review batch task after the translators finish with the files

Probably others too... but there's a few ideas that might be helpful.
