Alignment Tool: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

  • cannot realign
  • cannot save as .sdlxliff
  • cannot import into TM (quick or advanced)

I just spent several hours manually aligning the basic structure (headings, labels of tables and figures, some other items) of two docx files, hoping to help along the automatic "Realign" procedure and finally importing it into my (file-based) TM.

I have saved (.sdlalign) several times during this process as well as at the end, but now I find I cannot use any of the other functions, so I do not know how to continue.

Software:
Windows 7 x64
Trados Studio 2017 R1 14.1.6284.6
MS Word 2016

Error details:

When trying to realign, I also received a "some of the alignments are complex" (or similar) error - this disappeared when I (on a hunch) disconnected the first and last segments.

Any help?

//edit:

I just managed to get at least my manually confirmed segments imported into the TM:
instead of clicking the text label "Import into Translation Memory" (and then selecting quick or advanced), I accidentally hit the yellow/green icon above it. That worked, somehow.

I have confirmed that these aligned pairs are now in the TM.

I still do not have access to the other functions, and can therefore not automatically align the still unaligned items.

Also, (when trying to Realign), the "some of the passed items are complex!" error has reappeared.

//edit #2:

well, I have now finished aligning each and every (good) pair by hand and have imported them as described in edit#1.

Over the course of which, the alignment editor also managed to crash Studio twice, once during an attempt to save, and once while copying a symbol from left to right. Because when it rains...

(thankfully, I saved very frequently and so did not lose TOO much more time.)

Nevertheless, this whole mess is disappointing to say the least. I probably would have been faster even with ancient Winalign.

  • Thanks Paul,

    I watched your video before even trying my hand at the "new" (to me anyway) tool - it was quite helpful and I was hoping to finally retire Winalign.. well, not just yet, I suppose.

    I played around with resetting Studio just now:

    - after renaming the folder I started Studio again, opened the .sdlalign file

    - save as .sdlxliff -> worked

    - quick import -> worked (all segments already in the TM though, as expected)

    - Realign -> same errors as before

    - after that: everything (including the things that worked, i.e. save as sdlxliff and quick import) -> same errors as before

    - So I closed, reset and restarted Studio again

    - this time going for Realign right away: same errors;

    - once again cannot use other functions any more.

    I suppose this means the problem lies with the Realign function then.
