Studio 2017 SR1 is too slow, and shows unacceptable lag time even with new features disable. Fix it.

Since I've installed SR1 Studio has become unacceptably slow: yesterday I was editing a translation project, and I measured the lag it consistently displayed. I measure it over 100 segments, and the lag time varied between 1 second and 18 seconds, with an average of 6 seconds.

This is completely unacceptable.

Support has seen this on my computer, but they claim that since they cannot reproduce it, they cannot log it as an issue. They have suggested that I disable all the upLift and match repair features (done, with little effect -- and anyway, what's the point of new features if you cannot use them?), and also that i uninstall 2017 with SR1 and re-install the older version (which, I think is probably what I'm going to do next, but, again, what's the point of new upgrades if then the only thing to do is to uninstall them?).

What I have seen is that sat this point I'm much faster using a workflow that involves creating the project in Studio, then use memoQ to translate the sdxliff file, and finally finalize it in Studio. Since I doubt that a process which involves using memoQ is really what SDL intends, I believe that the programmers should get busy making the program work at an acceptable speed.

BTW, what I notice is that the lag time may be related to the hard drive

  • Hi

I moved your idea into the forum because it's not really an idea... even though it would be a good idea to find a solution for your problem!

What kind of hard drive do you have?  SSD is always going to give you the best performance results but if you didn't have this problem before then it seems unlikely your hard drive is to blame unless it coincidentally started to fail.

We released CU07 today which had quite a few fixes to problem we have seen reported since SR1.  Have you installed this and do you still have the same issues?

  • Hi Paul,

I was not sure where to put it: I was advised to mention my issue in the Community fora by SDL Support who said they could not help me: they saw the issue on my computer, but couldn't replicate it on theirs, so they could not log it as an issue, and the Community fora way was (according to them) the only way for me to bring the issue to SDL's developers attention.

I have an oldish 1TB hard drive (not SSD). I have plenty of RAM, and normally this computer performs OK - it's not a speed demon, but it's OK. When I translate sdlxliff files with memoQ, I do see any lag, nor is it showing any sign of failure. It is only with Studio that it is this slow -- only when I try to translate (or, worse, edit) in Studio.

As suggested by support, I've already disabled all the new upLift and match repair features, and the next step would be to uninstall SR1 and reinstall 2017 "plain".

I really don't want to go back to a version older than 2017, because in 2017 I can at least filter on both source and target at the same time (a very important feature for me), but I really wish that SDL's developers concentrated on performance, instead of new features that support promptly recommends we disable.

    Best,

    Riccardo
  • Hi ,

Have you updated to CU07 that was released today?

    gateway.sdl.com/.../communityknowledge

On your computer. The best way to get more performance if you are in the market for an upgrade at some point is not your RAM. RAM is important because it'll help you run multiple applications with less performance degradation, but Studio is still only a 32-bit application so more RAM won't help a lot. But using an SSD will definitely help as this can dramatically improve the performance of Studio.

However, let me know whether CU07 helped? If not can you advise whether you are also running any plugins and which ones they are? Also, have you tried deactivating your anti-virus temporarily to see if this helps too? If it does you might just need to whitelist Studio.

    Regards
