Translation Productivity: Now Next to Zero

Hello, everyone! This is an appeal to the saints.

Yesterday I switched from Studio 2015 to Studio 2017. The first worked very quickly on my computer, even with over 10 termbases and 15 TMs constantly plugged in. Now, with the 2017 version, Studio churns for about 10 seconds (really!) after confirming 1 segment and moving to the next. I have even tried turning off autopropagation, all TMs, all TBs, fragment searching, LookAhead, etc. Basically using Studio 2017 as a text editor now, and it still churns for about 10 seconds per segment. Yet it's not updating anything (TMs disabled), so what gives? The performance is so bad that I slept 2 hours last night. Really! My translation should have been done at midnight. I finished at 7:30 this morning instead. Didn't even waste time proofreading in Studio to avoid further delays. Cleaned up and proofread the exports.

Here are my system stats:

I am not a whiny SDL customer. I was very pleased with Studio 2015! Any ideas? Anybody else facing this problem? Help, SDL! (Or, alternatively, please revoke my 2017 license, reimburse me, and give me back 2015.)

Thanks all!

  • Have you upgraded your TMs to work with UpLift? Without this Studio will be extremely slow.
And from what I see, your computer is dated 2015. I cannot see the processor nor the HDD system in your PC. But if it is less than i5 and you have a spinning HDD inside, it is time to upgrade your computer too.
It is also crucial, where do you store your TMs and TBs - they must be local, on the computers HDD, NOT on a USB medium or other external resources.

  • Thank you very much for your reply, Jerzy. I'm going to apply your suggestions, except that I'm hesitating for the TMs and TBs. Why would they be responsible for slowing down work IF I had unplugged them all? (It would be understandably different if they were on and Studio was actively searching for terms and segments in them.)
