Problem downloading DGT TMs

Hi,

I'm having trouble downloading the bilingual extractions (FR-EN and DE-EN) from the DGT TM web page: ec.europa.eu/.../dgt-translation-memory the DGT Translation Memory

My overall aim is to create one large TM for each of my lang combinations (FR-EN and DE-EN) so I can then create Autosuggest dictionaries in Trados by merging the DGT TMs with my own smaller main TM for each lang pair. I'm following Paul Filkin's guidance on this: multifarious.filkin.com/.../

I work on a Mac (MacOS Sierra) and run Trados using Parallels Desktop with Windows 10 installed.

I first tried to download the TMXtract.jar file onto Windows. I have Java installed but when I click on the downloaded TMXtract file nothing happens.

I then decided to download the TMXtract file onto the MacOS but couldn't understand the instructions on the above DGT web page. I've not found any recent advice for Mac users on how to successfully download the bilingual extractions.

Has anyone got any experience working with a Mac and trying to download the bilingual extractions for use in Trados? Or has anyone else come across the problem I found in Windows?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

  • Hello ,

Funnily enough this problem was raised in an online conference I participated in this afternoon. I was asked this question and mentioned that this application worked for me, but that perhaps the problem was related to running on a MAC. I said this because I noted your post just before the event.

I then checked this TMXtract.jar on my computer this evening and it didn't work!! Something has hijacked the file association and I have been unable to reset it. Eventually after some time researching this I came across this site:

    johann.loefflmann.net/.../index.html

Normally I would not run stuff like this, and I'm not recommending it either, so you run it at your own risk. But, I did after a few hours of frustration and it worked! I also played around with Studio and MultiTerm afterwards just in case ;-) All seems to be well. If a website can be trusted this one does look genuine, but as I said you do this at your own risk.

Alternatively you can try and fix it using the DGT official solution which did not work for me at all, and is very difficult to follow since it was original posted before Studio even existed. So for an older operating system.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. That is indeed a coincidence if it was mentioned at your conference!

I followed the instructions on the webpage you provided and ran jarfix but the TMXtract file still doesn't open. I guess it must be because I have a Mac and that is interfering with it in some way.

It would be interesting to see if anyone else out there who uses a Mac has managed to download these files. I'm seriously considering buying a cheap PC laptop and using that to download the TMs - it would be a lot less hassle!

    Thanks again Paul,
