not a query but a suggestion

I recommend to add an option to be able to toggle between an horizontal and  a vertical layout of the Editor in Trados 2017  (source and target segments one below the other  or  arranged side by side), without the need to install any plug-in.

  • Hi ,

We have an ideas site for suggestions, so it's best to use that:

    http://ideas.sdl.com

It is still part of the community but it gives people the ability to vote for ideas they like the best. I can tell you however that it is unlikely we'll see this in Studio any time soon unless the Editor itself is rewritten with a different technology. We have looked at this in the past it was in the "too difficult" bucket.

We do have an online Editor available for GroupShare users that offers this capability, and you can use it for translating docx files for example in your Language Cloud account. But you can't handle your sdlxliff files from Studio unless it's done via GroupShare.

You might also find this tool from the appstore quite handy for review? If you have short segments for review the Studio layout can be very tiring to work in, but this app gives you what you're looking for so the review part is more comfortable:

    appstore.sdl.com/.../

Alternatively you can export your files for review using the "Export for bilingual review" feature in Studio and this can be done into either layout to suit your tastes. Benefit here is you can then import the changes afterwards.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Why Trados favor the vertical layout ? (source and target segments arranged side by side) I can see much more easily the source and target at the same time if they are one immediately below the other, instead of having to constantly switch my eyes from left to right and viceversa as it happens now with the current side-side layout. I am sure many other users feel the same.

  • I believe many more favour the vertical columns which is why it was adopted in the first place.

I personally think the horizontal layout is better for many things, especially review against the source. So it would have been good to have both, but as I said this is unlikely to happen in the Studio editor as it is today.
