Slow performance of SDL Trados Studio 2017

Hi,

I work as a translator in a translation agency and I have been using SDL Trados Studio for several years.

A few weeks ago, I installed SDL Trados Studio 2017 on my computer and since then, it has become extremely slow: when I go from one translation segment to another, ‘Searching’ takes up a very long time and I also often get the message ‘Not Responding’.

I don’t see a noticeable effect when I deactivate Fuzzy Match Repairs and LookAhead.

I work with two TMs: one has some 116,000 Translation Units and the other has about 368,000 TUs. I already upgraded the first TM (which took up an enormous amount of time!). When I’m using it, I always encounter problems. I did not upgrade the other TM yet.

I’m not considering the possibility of installing the TMs on my local disk, because I have to share them with my colleague in the office.

I have an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 CPU 3.30 GHz computer, a 64-bit operating system and 4 GB RAM. I was already advised to extend it to 16 GB RAM, which will soon be done. I hope this will already help.

As this worries me a lot, do you have any other suggestions to speed up the performance of Studio 2017? Many thanks!

  • Hi ,

Working with file-based resources on a network share is possibly one of your problems. If you want to share TMs properly then then you should be working with GroupShare otherwise you are liable to face problems from a number of areas that could affect performance.

However, maybe your problem is more simple than that. Can you check the possible problems in this article?

The most likely problem is going to be your security software not allowing Studio to work unhindered. The upgrade could easily have been picked up by your "protection".

  • Hi Paul,
Since slow performance of SDL Studio 2017 is a fact already acknowledged by SDL, please tell the community when this issue will be resolved.
    Thank you.
  • Hi ,

Improvements in the performance of Studio are an ongoing task with the development team. But the reasons for slow performance are not only down to bugs in Studio. I definitely agree that 2017 does feel more sluggish than 2015, and we are working on the things necessary to improve this. But each case need to be looked at in isolation to make sure that there are no external factors at work which could improve the situation for a user:

    - external drives
    - using remote file storage (dropbox, onedrive etc.)
    - antivirus updates
    - windows updates
    - server connections that have been left in the options
    - plugins that may have their own issues (weblookup was a good example in the past)
    etc.

Then on top of that we have the things the development team are working on to try and improve things. There is a CU due fairly soon that might resolve some of the issue. But I can't tell you when "this issue" will be resolved because it's not as simple as that. I can only tell you that we are doing our best to investigate every problem reported through the support team, and many of them in the community too. Once we have isolated the issue that needs to be resolved by development then it's scheduled for resolution and worked on.

I also appreciate your frustration, but I would ask you to work with our support team on this so we can properly validate where your issues are coming from, whether it's something on your side or that of the product.

    Regards

    Paul
