Trados not compatible with Windows updates. Can you please advise on Windows version on which Trados will work without major breakdowns?

Dear SDL,

After a recent Windows update, about two months ago, I started running into problems, first starting with not being able to import dictionaries (the general massive failure error), but the problems have been snowballing and the system has now completely disintegrated.

Last I used it, I counted 9 different errors concerning basic functions - e.g. I cannot copy tags into the target segment, the search function is not working, export to bilingual review is not working, save target as is not working, now even TM search seems to be starting having troubles.

After trying everything possible, and even after a remote assistance session with my client's IT/Trados specialist, I have not been able to resolve the issue. I have now resorted to buying a new computer, which I was not scheduled to do for another few months, because I do not want to have to solve this issue twice, on my current computer and again on the new computer. This has been affecting my work for over a month and I am now quite desperate.

My question is:

Can SDL please recommend a version of Windows they feel confident that their software will work on without such major breakdowns? So that when I buy the new computer, I do not have to go through this again?

Thank you.

  • Hi Alena,

Sorry to hear that you are having so many issues.
Can you first confirm that you are running Windows on a PC and not on a MAC using VM/Parallels.

From the issues you are describing, I am doubtful that it is a direct issue of the Windows versions you are running (we fully support Windows 7/8.1 and W10)- but more the case there is another program possibly causing a conflict in shortcut commands etc.

I would therefore suggest the following-(on the machine that has been causing the issues)

    1) Completely uninstall Studio/MultiTerm and any/all SDL app store applications you may have installed.
    2) Disable your antivirus temporarily.
    3) Now login to your SDL account and perform a clean reinstall of Studio and MultiTerm- ensuring that both have the updates installed and are on the same versions. (I suggest using Chrome or FF for your browser and NOT IE or Edge.
    4) Once installed- work as you would normally and see if the issues still arise.
    5) If not- you can start reinstalling the apps one by one and see if and when any issues occur.

Don't forget SDL, also provide FREE installation and licensing support and would be more than happy to take a look and see what is going wrong-

Please let me know how you get on.

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and for all the advice.

I am running Trados 2015 on Windows 8.1 operating system. I have already tried a complete re-installation of Trados as well as a complete re-installation of the operating system. After re-installing Windows, I did not install any unnecessary applications for fear that one of them could be interfering with Trados. I think the only applications I installed were Chrome, Skype, Microsoft Office and an antivirus program (the same antivirus I was using before the issues started). Also, the problems included issues not related to shortcuts, e.g. part of the menu was disabled, the word count at the bottom of the editor froze, etc. Could all this be caused by an interference with another application?

The only other thing that I thought of trying at this point was reinstalling Windows again and stopping it from doing updates and see if that helps (if this is an update issue).

Also, for the new computer, would you say that getting a Windows 10 would be a safer bet? I heard that Trados 2015 SR3 had some issues on Windows 10 initially...

Thank you for all your help. Really appreciate it.

    With kind regards,

    Alena
