Annoyance report of Trados getting slower and slowerSppe

Annoyance report.

Trados basic features are getting slower and slower with each upgrade - which is critical for someone working 10 hours per day with Trados, 6 days per week. New bugs might be fixed, which is good, but as a translator who needs first at all a FAST software - despite a Icore 7 - I am more and more waiting previous seconds to go from one segment to the next in Trados, or with the latest bug fix, to even input one word!

1) Since 2 days, coincident with the last bug fix released - each time I select a value in the Autoselect popup windows - I wait a couple of seconds. Before it was instantaneous. As I might use this feature a few times per sentence (when MT is not allowed) - it really slows down the translation process.

2) Since Trados 2017 - inputting an entry in the TD is very very painful - with the Termbase viewer refreshing for a few second its windows over and over. The last bug fix seemed to have improve this problem, but it is barely noticeable.

3) Since Trados 2017 - the feature of Cloud translation with custom dictionaries has been taken away, replaced by Adaptative MT. The fact that this feature was lost in the upgrade wasn't obvious at all. Since I used Trados 2017, I have found that Adaptative MT is a cut back - as Adaptative MT is not learning fast enough and is far from replacing your own custom dictionary.

4) Since Adaptative MT - the speed of feeding the data and going from one segment to the next is much slower to the point that most of the time, I pretranslate a document and then, I disable Cloud Translation to avoid waiting previous seconds when moving from one segment to the next. So what is the use of Adaptative MT if I need to disable it?

My question is Trados team aware of those problems and will we have fixes which address those basics feature.

Sincerely, Patrice

  • Hi

Thanks for your report.  I'll have a first crack at responding:

I don't know what AutoSuggest features you are using but try turning off the lookahead feature (File -> Options -> Editor -> Automation).  I'm a bit confused by this statement:

    (when MT is not allowed)

It sounds as though you might be using MT AutoSuggest to replace the use of MT pretranslation and therefore avoid the AT status in your segments?  If this is what you are doing then you are still using MT.

I'd agree with you here.  But you might find it's easier if you dock the TB Viewer so it doesn't have to keep flying in and out.

In the last update, CU8, this dictionary feature was put back.  AdaptiveMT did not replace it, there was just more work required to support it in the new framework.

Your problem may be related to your internet connection and not a problem of Studio at all.  Have you done any tests on this?  Could also be related to your security software which may have taken offence to the last upgrades.  Try making sure that you have whitelisted Studio properly in your AntiVirus for example.

There are always things we need to do to ensure that performance is better and we do continually look at these things.  But it's always worth checking that you do have the latest version of the software (I know you said you did but you also seemed unaware that the dictionaries were back) and that your security software is not hindering performance at all.  This article might be useful:
