I would love to know how to unravel this mystery... my 2-column (source, target) Excel file has tag information (a different font and red colour) that Studio does not seem to recognize (while it does this very well with Word and other formats).
What can I do to rid myself of this throbbing headache?

From help:
By default, SDL Trados Studio respects the formatting used in the target column, including cell background and text colors. If you want to transfer the style from the source column instead, disable the Preserve Target Style checkbox.
