    This is a restriction of the Freelance licence. The Professional licence gives you access to all the languages. If you want to change pairs in the Freelance you need to reinstall. This version is designed for translators on the basis that most translate into no more than 4 target languages. There are exceptions of course but as a general rule this world for most users.

    The Professional licence cost 1800 euros more, which is clearly not a realistic price for a freelancer. Obviously I'm not going to pay you 1800 euros, so that I can earn 200 euros once a year doing the odd translation from German that a regular outsourcer may send me.

    I only translate into Danish and UK English (or perhaps the odd text into French, but only rarely), and I regularly translate from Danish, English and French. Because the three Scandinavian languages Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are all based on the same, once common, language, I occasionally translate from Norwegian or Swedish to Danish. The differences between Norwegian and Danish are no bigger than the differences between some variants in the large language groups like English or French, but simply because Norwegian and Danish have two different names, they count as two languages, whereas you get dozens of language variants for the price of one in English and French. The trouble arises when a single outsourcer very occasionally sends a German to Danish translation. That takes me into the banned language slot number 6.

    This limit is therefore of no benefit to anyone, except your competitors such as for example MemoQ, which does not limit the number of languages. You won't get 1800 euros in such a case, as it would be a losing business for the freelance translator, so the 5-language limit simply works as a technical obstacle, forcing me to either waste time to 'repair' or reinstall Studio, or simply use another CAT tool. You don't gain a cent, and I don't gain anything. You only make other CAT tools without such a limit look more attractive. You are helping your competitors.

    As a freelance translator, I don't suddenly get 96 hours a day to work just because I pay you 1800 euros more. Being able to do the odd 6th-language translation does not mean there is a great earning potential that you can dip into, as there is simply less time for the other language combinations.

    I really don't see why SDL should restrict the number of languages I can work in. It's like selling a car (in the US, for example) and limiting it to 5 US states, unless the buyer is willing to pay 4 times as much to be allowed to drive all over the US. Studio is already amongst the most expensive CAT tools on the market, so you ought to focus on making it the most useful too, instead of telling us how to work.

    Why are the called “default” languages, by the way? A default is something you can easily change when you need it. Not so with your “default” languages. The term is incorrect.

    How many translators do you think need more than 5 languages? I'm not going to debate this with you as it's not anything I can change anyway, but the reason it's this way is because the Professional version is aimed more at Agencies than individual translators and they need the additional languages. If you contact the sales team and make your case for needing an additional one or two then it might be possible to cater for your needs.

    But as the language are so similar then perhaps you don't need the additional languages anyway? Can you call your TMs whatever you like and just use them for the occasional work you need so you keep the small differences separate? On the bright side it saves you even having to use AnyTM to be able to benefit from the TMs in another language.

    Why are they called "default" languages? I have no certain idea, but technically I don't think it has to be easy to change them. Where does it say that? I know you'd like to be able to change them in an easy way, and you can change them... but it's not a simple checkbox.

    Hi Ali,

    Are you sure? I though you had to reinstall or at least run a repair installation. I didn't think carrying out a Studio reset caused you to choose your languages again.

    I was curious about Thomas Frost's comments about the similarity of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish, and Google immediately found this Wikipedia article:

    "Generally, speakers of the three largest Scandinavian languages (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish) can read each other's languages without great difficulty. This holds especially true of Danish and Norwegian. The primary obstacles to mutual comprehension are differences in pronunciation."

    Based on this, he appears to have a good case for classifying these 3 languages as language variants.

    Hi Bruce,

    The best approach would be to submit it as an idea and see whether it gets support or not. Then we can discuss it and see whether it makes sense for us or not. I don't think making them language variants is the right approach, rather the argument is whether it's fair or not to have them take up 3 choices for language when setting up the Freelance application. I think that based on the lack of discussion around these three languages to date that not being able to select more than 5 languages has not really been an issue for more than a few users.

    I apologise for giving incorrect information... I'll delete my post so it doesn't mislead anyone :)

    However, I think this is a valid point here:

    It is a healthy practice to periodically perform a Windows Repair on Studio, not only because it allows you to change your 5 languages. You can export your profile with any customisation you have made to your settings, via File>Setup>Manage User Profiles>Export User Settings.

    This thread discusses the merits (and irritations) of the process:

    It shows where to perform a repair on Studio - or indeed on any piece of software - via Control Panel. A Windows Repair is a very sensible thing to do after any major Windows update for example. It helps to smooth out any minor corruptions triggered by changes in software or environment.
