Help! How do I recover my Studio 2017 settings after system crash?! (The culprit: most likely a corrupt .sdlproj file)

My system crashed (a Windows 10 blue screen!) and when I came back and started Studio a screen showed as if I was a new user. I said OK (big mistake!), Studio opened up and all my personal settings and configurations were gone! How do I recover those settings? Where should l look for them? Fortunately I have my daily back-up. Please, tell me which folders, xml files, etc. should I locate and replace. Incidentally, I noticed that a rogue project file (.sdlproj) was the culprit as it got corrupted (I verified that it was just garbled and it was not showing, in Notepad++, as an XML file). Once I retrieved an earlier copy of the .sdlproj file and replaced it, the project opened up fine. However, as I said, my Studio 2017 settings were all gone! The caveat here is: DO NOT say OK when Studio opens up as if you were a new user! Simply cancel that and try and find a most likely corrupt .sdlproj file. Thanks.

  • Hi ,

I guess the folders to copy back from your backup are the same as those cited for resetting a Studio profile, so:

    C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Local\SDL Trados Studio
    C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Local\ProjectApi

    C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\SDL Trados Studio
    C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\ProjectApi

    C:\Users\[User_Name]\Documents\Studio 2017

Try that... (after first making sure you replace the corrupt .sdlproj file again if it's in the backup version of Documents\Studio 2017)

    All the best

    Ali :)

Thanks, Alison. However, I believe that just replacing some xml files will not bring back my settings.

I will have to make do with what I have now. I also believe the SDL developers should create an app to backup and recover personal settings. It just happens that when Studio 2017 crashes, as explained, you have to start all over again customizing Studio to your taste and needs.

    I found this:

    C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\ProjectApi\14.0.0.0

Has this link in one of the files:

    C:\Users\[User_Name]\Documents\Studio 2017\Projects

    But there's also

    a UserSettings.xml file here

    C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

But I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole! These files have binary information too, so not just plain vanilla XML files. Let's leave them alone.

    Cheers!
