Unable to Close Trados 2015; Unable to Edit Alignment

Hello,

I'm a novice translator and I'm trying to learn Trados 2015.  Unfortunately I've run into several problems:

1.  I created a short sample text and translated it, but I can't figure out how to finish it.  I was able to advance the draft to "translated" and "reviewed," but not "signed-off."  Is it necessary to do this step? The options for "publish project," and "create return package" are gray, so it seems there's nothing I can do with a project once I'm done translating and reviewing the segments.  I can't even delete it.

2. I can't close Trados.  I get an error saying "Cannot set the active view to a view that is disabled or not available."

3. I tried out the alignment feature using an old translation.  The source document and translated document loaded just fine, but the segment connections are all wrong.  Unfortunately I can't fix the connections because the options to connect and disconnect are gray.  I can check boxes next to segments that aren't connected, but that's all I can do with them.

4. After translating the practice text, I tried to create an empty TM and update it with the translation I just made.  However I see no way to do this.  I realize now I should have created the TM before the project, but I was able to add the new TM to the project just fine.  The problem is that there's no way to update the TM with the segments I've translated.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Laura Beach (LauraBeach),

Firstly my apologies for delay in getting back to you as your posting had been overseen.

Now there are many points in your post, so I am going to try and respond to each one as we go - but before we start- its worth mentioning that although you are using Studio 2015- you do have Studio 2017 available in your account (free of charge) and I would recommend upgrading to 2017 ASAP. (its free).

To finish the project you simply need to save the project - Go to FILE (blue tab top left hand corner) then select 'SAVE TARGET AS' as choose the appropriate folder to save the target file. Then if this was a file you needed to return to the client, you can simply attach the file to an email and send.

Functionality such as Publish Project is functionality used by Professional/Group Share users and is not available to users of the freelance version.

'Return package' can only be used if you for example received a project package (PPX) from the client.- Such packages are used widely and will contain everything you need to complete the client translation.

The first thing i would try here is go to the VIEW tab in the Editor Mode and click RESET WINDOW LAYOUT.

Should this fail to provide a solution, we would need to look a little deeper as I think you may have inadvertently either deleted/renamed or moved the folder in the document structure.

Maybe the following You Tube video will help identify what is going wrong-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS1_BVi_YJU

If not, let me know and we can set up a remote webex and take a look at this together.

As a rule, I would personally always suggest 'creating a new project' in Studio 2015 rather than opting for 'Single File Translation' as I believe this removes the chances of you forgetting to add any resources you may need.

    However in this case-

you can simply open the file in the editor view you have translated- then click on Batch Tasks- then select upgrade main/project translation memories allowing you to commit the translation to the memory.
