Error "object reference not set to an instance of an object" when opening a file

I know there have been numerous reports on this problem, but I have tried several things with no luck so far, and I am desperate because I am facing a deadline. My SDL Trados Studio 2015 version has been working fine for a long time, I have never had problems, neither with offline projects nor with online GroupShare projects. Until today. When I try to open a file within a project, I get the "object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. Offline projects, online projects, same error every time. It worked fine yesterday, and suddenly I cannot open files anymore. I tried uninstalling en reinstalling Studio, but that didn't help. I tried opening the file as a Single Translation Document, that doesn't work either. 

What now? Can anyone help me?

    Unfortunately this error message is very generic and does not tell us much at all.

    Can you please post the error trace in Community please as this allows us to narrow down the problem-

    Also as you have mentioned you have seen many reports on this message- can you confirm which solutions you have tried please.

    The basic measures solutions are always-

    1) Reset Window layout in Studio - then restart Studio.

    2) Reset Studio

    3) Ensure both Studio AND MultiTerm are both up to date and on the latest release.

    I tried the first two options, they did not help.

    I checked both applications, they are both up to date.

     

    Most reports about this error concern particular files and apparently could be solved by using other applications.

    In my case, I get the error in general when trying to open a file. I checked several projects, several files, but none will open.

    I personally have not seen any cases where after you have reset Studio properly that you are not able to open anything at all.

    I would suggest therefore logging a support ticket

    Hi Steven,

    I thought by "reset" you meant reinstalling. I have now followed the reset procedure from your link, and it worked! I did get a "general massive catastrophic system failure" (!!!!!) first, but everything seems to work again now. Thank you so much for your help!
