"Error: detecting hexadecimal error value 0x00 is an invalid character. Line 1, position 1" when trying to create a new file-based TM

I'm getting this error message when trying to create a new file-based translation memory for a new project: Error: detecting hexadecimal error value 0x00 is an invalid character. Line 1, position 1. This is the second project I'm working on with the newly installed SDL Trados 2017 Freelance. In other words, this problem did not occur with the first project. I cannot recall ever having faced this problem with the 2014 version. The version I have is 2017 SR1 - 14.1.6413.8. Is there a simple way to avoid this error? As a workaround, to have a memory for this project, I reused an old empty one.

  • Hi ,

I haven't come across this one when creating a TM but perhaps try some simple changes before looking for a more complex resolution.

    - try creating the TM in a different location, perhaps on your local drive at C:
    - check whether you have any other TMs in your project already, coming from a template perhaps
    - see if you can create the TM from your Translation Memories View rather in your Project and then add the TM to your Project afterwards

Might help to start narrowing down where the problem is coming from and how we resolve it.
