"Error: detecting hexadecimal error value 0x00 is an invalid character. Line 1, position 1" when trying to create a new file-based TM

I'm getting this error message when trying to create a new file-based translation memory for a new project: Error: detecting hexadecimal error value 0x00 is an invalid character. Line 1, position 1. This is the second project I'm working on with the newly installed SDL Trados 2017 Freelance. In other words, this problem did not occur with the first project. I cannot recall ever having faced this problem with the 2014 version. The version I have is 2017 SR1 - 14.1.6413.8. Is there a simple way to avoid this error? As a workaround, to have a memory for this project, I reused an old empty one.

  • The error occurs right at the selection of New > New translation memory, and the same occurs both in conjunction with creating the project or from the Translation Memories view. This also means that the problem occurs before the selection of the file location. Typically I use the project folder and create a TM subfolder for the TM files. There are no other TMs in use for this project. Has something gone wrong with the upgrade, or is there a bug in the service package, perhaps? If you want to look into this more closely, perhaps you can take remote control to see if there's something fishy in the configuration (not tonight though -- it's 2 AM here).

  • Hi ,

Probably worth just trying a reset then as this often cures a multitude of problems that are hard to nail down. Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

So the path would become this:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0_old

If you can't find this folder then you need to unhide your hidden files/folders:

    www.howtogeek.com/.../

If that doesn't resolve your problem then log a support case so a support engineer can look at the problem properly. For licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    gateway.sdl.com/liveagentlicensing

    You have two options:

    1. Submit a case using a webform
    2. Use live chat to get a licence reset

You want to use the first option and make sure that you refer to this thread so the teams can see what you have tried already.

    Regards
