Garbled sentences in English to French translation; certain sentences not extracted into SDLXLIFF

Hi there,

I have an issue with characters incorrectly converted in an English to French translation when exporting the translation to *docx format. (SDL Trados Studio 2015 SR3)

In the first place, certain sentences were not extracted into the SDLXLIFF. In addition, the accents in French were displayed in a different font in the exported Word docx file (not Arial, as used in the original *.docx file); the font could actually not be identified in Word (font type picklist blank). When our internal reviewer edited the French translation, entire sentences were garbled (e.g. instead of "Comment les organisations européennes respecteront-elles les exigences de conformité et géreront-elles la sécurité et les risques au cours des cinq prochaines années ?" to "Comment les organisations européomment les organisations europxigences de conformitions europont-elles la snformit et les risques au cours des cinq prochaines années ?" Strangely, only those sentences were affected that featured any type of French accent.
Which of the filters should be checked?

Any experiences? Any input is very much appreciated.

Best regards,
Katrin

  • As you already noted, the font used could not be identified in Word. So it has been substituted there by something else. Same happens in Studio, however here the substitution of the substitution seems to work worse than in Word. But this is a consequence of the way you show your translation in Studio. This happens only when you use the WYSIWYG view, where Studio tries to show the user the "real" formatting. So you see bold or italics as bold or italic. However, you can change this view to a more convenient one, where NO font substitution will take place in Studio. Just go to File -> Options -> Editor and select "Show all tags, but do not show formatting".
As for the sentences which have not been extracted: are those sentences in text fields or graphics?
