Dari (Afghanistan) and Persian (Iran) treated as two varieties of one language?

Studio 2017 lets me choose Dari (Afghanistan) as working language. Dari is a regional variety of the Persian language, which you can also tell from the language shortcut 'prs-af'. Another regional variety is Farsi, the Persian spoken in Iran. Are the two languages treated as regional varieties by Trados (like e.g. German (Germany) and German (Austria)) or as separate languages? In other words: If I choose one of the two at setup, will both be available?

  • Hello David Eickhoff (DavidEickhoff),

I needed to check the details of this with one of our linguists....

Although Dari and Farsi are essentially the same language but use different accents I am of the understanding that DARI uses a lot of borrowed English words, but this is not the case with Farsi and that both Dari and Farsi have different terminology for the same item

Therefore it is suggested you select DARI and PERSIAN (Farsi) in Studio when creating your projects and not just Persian as a coverall.

So just to be clear- this would count as 2 of your available 5 languages in Studio.

    Hope this helps
