Search and replace across multiple files in Trados 2017

I am currently working on a large project containing around 200 individual files. I have realised that I have mistranslated one term within all of these files (it is used about four times) and need to find and replace the term (while also knowing which files the term is in - so I can let the reviser know). How can I find and replace one term across multiple files?

  • Hi

Highlight all the files, right-click and select Open for translation. They will open all together as if they were one SDLXLIFF (we call that 'virtual merge') so you can perform your find and replace as if it was one file. To make it easier to note the name of each file, first filter for the word you wish to change, using either the Source term or the Target*. The Display Filter is found on the Review ribbon:

Once you have filtered, you will have less segments visible so it will be easier to find the filenames, thus:

Using Find and Replace (Ctrl+H) you can find them and replace them individually or as a whole:

There are extra options to make the search more precise, depending whether the term varies, e.g. has a capital letter sometimes.

If the term begins with a vowel but the new term begins with a consonant and that changes the article before it, e.g. an > a, then you can first perform a search using the article.

*If you want to search for both the source term AND the target term, e.g. if the term is translated different ways according to context, you can use the Advanced filter:

Hope this is enough detail, ask if you need more...

    All the best,

    Alison :))

  • Thank you so much for your response. I followed the instructions and found the term in the relevant files (2 files out of 200). Nicky.
