Problems when saving XLIFF-files to XLF Trados 2017

Hi,

I'm currently experiencing a couple of issues with SDL Trados 2017 version, that I would love to see if I could get some help with.
The agency that I'm working for sends me XLIFF-files that I work with in Trados and when sending them back they want it in XLF, in order to deliver it to the client. Recently they have mentioned that hyphens in the files that I deliver have disappeared however, when opening and checking the file on my end, they're still there.
The second issue have been that when I have saved an XLIFF-file to a XLF-file then the umlauts in the entire target column have turned into black symbols with question marks. (I translate between English-Swedish). However, when I open the XLIFF-file it all looks normal. So I'm pretty stuck since I cannot deliver a target file as such to the client.

I sent a message to the customer support, that suggested that I could run a repair on Studio but that function cannot be found. (I looked under the tab 'Add-Ins', and the only options there are: SDL AppStore, Plug-ins and Variables Manager.) No sign om TM Repair. Or am I looking in the wrong place?

I would really appreciate if you would have any ideas to how to solve this? Is there any plug-ins that are to be released soon? Would it by any chance be any difference if I uninstalled Trados on my computer to reinstall it again? Or is there a possibility of downgrading?

Many thanks for your answer,

Ranja

  • Hi ,

Thank you for sending me the files. Your problem is indeed one of encoding. You sent me one good XLF and one bad, the good one is this:

    UTF-8 with BOM

    The bad one is this:

    ISO-8859-1

It looks as though you, or your customer, is changing the encoding of the file somewhere in the process. If you are working with single documents you can alter the encoding when you save the target file so maybe be careful there? Otherwise I'm not sure how the encoding is being changed as these are also memoQ XLIFF files and there are no options for this at all on the filetype.
