SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 bugs

Before? after? SR1, I found (my?) SDL Trados Studio 2017 featuring three annoying bugs:

  1. As soon as you start splitting the "natural" translation segments into sub-segments, in order to make translation or analogies easier, the statistics tool "goes nut" (phrase used by a fellow translator about said tool long ago).
  2. Studio 2017 does not save my project settings: every time I open an ongoing project, I must edit them again, tedious!
  3. Every now and then, my translation memories just stop doing their job, they stop suggesting me obvious, even 100%, analogies; in order to get them back to work, I must close the project and open it again (and then, problem #2!).

When do you expect these bugs, most probably already known to you, will be fixed?

Best regards.

  • Hi

    These are not known bugs.

Please explain what this means?  Examples with screenshots are always good so we can reproduce what you are referring to.  There are many tools for analysing in Studio so just saying "Statistics tool" is unhelpful.

This is definitely not a bug, if it was we'd see this very basic requirement all over the forums and in Support.  It's more likely to do with your windows permissions.  Perhaps try installing and running Studio with admin rights as this might help point to where the problem on your computer is coming from.

This sounds as though it might be linked to the use of "Lookahead".  Have you tried unchecking that option?  This is a known issue, it's not a bug as it's a known limitation of working with this feature, but it is undesirable behaviour.

  • Hello Paul,

Thank you for addressing my problems one by one. Let us try and go deeper into them.

Statistics tools: You are right, there are several ones, on three different pages (Editor, Folders, Projects); let us concentrate on the one at the bottom right of the Editor page, the one we keep our eyes on while translating (Anyway, when this one goes crazy, the two other ones are dysfunctional too).

I created a screenshot from my last translation job: should I send it to paul.filkin@sdl.com? It is far from being the craziest example I ever met: with longer source texts, I was faced with such silly percentages  as -1234,56% (Yes, negative and huge percentages are a constant issue).

By the way, if after creating and translating the sub-segments you close the file and open it again, the three percentages (to be translated, draft translations, confirmed) are back to normal; of course, when you go on working, the percentages go crazy again).

Project settings not saved: When installing so many successive versions of Studio (and SDLX before), I was never asked if I wanted to install them with admin rights; besides I am sole user and therefore administrator of my computer (Windows 7 Pro). In concrete terms, what do you suggest me to do now?

Translation memories stopping working properly: I followed your piece of advice and unchecked the "Lookahead" option, and... so far so good.

    Best regards.

  • Hi

    Apologies for the late response...

I got your screenshots and I'm afraid I have no solution for you other than to try running a wordcount batch task or an analysis perhaps.  This is a refresh issue which the development team don't seem able to fix. I'm embarrassed and fed up repeating this as it has been going on for far too long.  So the only solutions I can offer you are these:

    • run a batch task and this may resolve the count
    • use the WIP report instead.  I know this is an additional few steps and not as handy as just glancing at the bottom of your screen but it is a good report and you may find it useful.

I think we should do a remote session so you can show me this problem.  Let me know when you will be available and we can look at this together.  Clearly there is something wrong, either with the way you are working or with your permissions in windows that are preventing the files holding these settings from being written to.  If you had no problems in the past then it is more likely to be the latter.
