How to tell tell Studio Pro 2017 SR1 to ignore certain strings of characters in the source, so that these get ignored in project calculation? Or perhaps even better - also make these separate segments in the project and have them locked?

Hi Team,

I was wondering if anyone could perhaps shine a little of their selfless wisdom on this. 

There's this client with an IT system that generates their source content for translation in excel. There is customer tagging peppered in there, or "technical text" but not HTML or any other formal markings, just strings of characters that are important to that particular custom IT system. These can be identified by certain common features. 

These strings oughtn't be translated but must be transferred into the output exactly as they are, down to every single character. 

Is there an obvious trick we're missing to easily tell Studio to do just that? I mean identify these upon an algorithm, bring them over into the translation as separate segments and and lock them up?

    If these strings can be matched by unique regular expressions, then it is possible. But it really depends on what kind of strings they are.
    For example, if the strings are contained in an extra column, you can easily hide that one in Excel and so make it untranslable in Studio.
    But if these strings are within the column with text or - even worse - within the cells with text, it can be problematic. It really depends on what kind of strings they are.
    Recently we had a case, where all text between two $ signs should not be translated. That was quite easy to solve. But the other day the text between _ (underliner) should have been protected. The problem was, that the text to be protected did contain underliner itself, like _this_kind_of_text_ - and we could not easily distinguish, how many _ signs are there. Also the protectable text was not always followed by a space... So it can really be tricky.

    Yes, these things are mixed in between the text in individual cells in excel, in a column. But having said mixed, they normally would be at the beginning of a cell and end with a semicolon.

    And also, the client seems to have almost agreed to get the system to produce extra markings for these technical strings. Say if we could get them all marked with $$ at the beginning and && at the end of each string, what would the "quite easy" procedure in Studio be?

    If the only occurrence of the $$ or @@ would be to mark the untranslatable parts, so you could parse them in the embedded content of Excel file type with a very simple regex:
    For $:
    \$.+?\$
    For @
    @.+?@
    This is really all...
