Good morning to all, and to whom it may concern.

I have tested how SDL Studio 2017 SR1 (latest CU9) manages MS Word DOCX and Adobe InDesign IDML documents containing footnotes or endnotes.

In fact, I did not face any problem working on both file types. All foot- and endnotes have been correctly imported in Studio, and I was able to see and to translate them, and I was able to generate again final translated MS Word DOCX and Adobe InDesign IDML files.

The only problem I have found is that if you load the final translated and generated Adobe InDesign (IDML) file containing endnotes in an Adobe InDesign version older than CC 2018 (say, Adobe InDesign CC 2017, or another previous version), notes references inside the text itself and the whole content of the endnotes will be ignored, even if they are actually present and translated in the Studio Editor window and in the final genared IDML file. I mean… they seem to disappear.

This does not happen when dealing with IDML files containing footnotes, which are exported and correctly read/displayed by versions of Adobe InDesign older than CC 2018.

This is not a problem of Studio, but it is due to the fact that Adobe InDesign versions before CC 2018 are not able to manage endnotes, but just footnotes. In fact, this feature, among others, has been introduced with CC 2018 version.

There are a couple of solutions to avoid this problem when dealing with Adobe InDesign but, in fact, this is a matter regarding InDesign and NOT Studio. So, it has no sense to discuss them here.

Anyway, the problem does not exist when you receive from your client an IDML file, as the Studio final translated generated IDML file will be correctly read/displayed by the client’s Adobe InDesign version.

No problem, instead, concerning final translated exported MS Word DOCX documents.

  • the SOURCE folder contains 2 original MS Word DOCX files, 2 Adobe InDesign CC 2018 INDD files, 2 Adobe InDesign 2018 IDML files, 2 PDF files (reflecting the CC 2018 INDD files), 1 Adobe InDesign CC 2017 INDD file, 1 Adobe InDesign CC 2017 IDML file, and the pertinent PDF file;
  • the STUDIO_2017_Foot- Endnotes_Project_en-GB_en-US folder contains all project files I have used to test foot- and endnotes (source language = EN(GB) / target language = EN(US), where I have translated into Italian foot- and endnotes content segments);
  • the TM folder contains a fake TM from EN(GB) to EN(US) just containing, at the moment, the Italian translation of foot- and endnotes contents.

To allow all Studio users (Professional and Freelance editions) to access these files, the Studio 2017 project has been created using EN(GB) as source language and EN(US) as target language, even if I have translated the notes content into Italian. This will allow Freelance version users, which have a limit of 5 languages, to access the project, provided that one of them is English.

I hope this may help you to better understand how SDL Studio 2017 manages foot- and/or endnotes.
