Spacing error in Trados Studio 2017

I’m wondering if you can advise on this problem which I’ve been having over the past few weeks. My client has provided a PDF for us to translate, and it’s editable. When analyse this or open it in Studio, lots of spaces appear which is throwing my word count out. I’ve even tried converting to Word to see if these spaces are in the original file but they don’t seem to be.

For example, the Word/PDF file text is:

General English programs develop students' listening, speaking and general communication skills. The Semi-Intensive English program offers classes only in the morning, providing ample opportunity to put skills to use in the destination city. And here in Studio:

And in Studio it's:

General Eng lish programs develop students' listening, speaking and general communication skills. The Semi-Intens ive English program   offers classes only in the morning, providing  amp  le opportunity to put ski lls to  use in the  de stin ation city.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

  • Hi ,

It would be helpful to have an example of the problem file to be able to answer this one. The one you sent me does not have any of these issues so I am questionning whether you sent me the same file you tested. Certainly I am very sure that Studio would not cause something like this without there being a problem in the source file in the first place. I will send you a video explaining.

You also asked me about IDML support. I suggest you check the option for processing unsupported versions in the filetype options as it may be that you have some new version of InDesign I'm not aware of... would be good to know what version your client is using.

  • Hi Paul,

I've provided you with the source file over email for you to look at, and screenshots of what happens when I open these files in Trados. I've pasted an example of the spacing issue in the original post too. What else do you need from me in terms of an example? Evidently this is not happening on your system but I can guarantee you, it's happening on mine. I'm unsure how I can re-create this problem any more than I have, unless you visit my office and see this for yourself on my laptop?!

As I mentioned also in my email, my client uses Adobe InDesign CC 2018. If I try to analyse the .idml file from this artwork package in Studio 2017, it tells me that it isn't a supported version. My typesetter has down saved to the older CS4 version, and this is supported. Are you saying that Studio should actually support this version of InDesign?

  • Hi Claire,

The problem seems to be that you sent me a DOCX that had been cleaned up already, but showed me a screenshot based on opening the PDF (or perhaps an uncleaned DOCX created from the PDF conversion). This is why I cannot reproduce the problem.

On the IDML, I think you should be able to process that in Studio 2017. If you send me one of your IDML files I can happily test it.
