Can I use TMs of "SDL WorldServer"' using SDL Trados Studio ?

One sime and quick question.

Today, I received a Link from my client.

tableau.sdlproducts.com/.../login

I, of course, know ID and Password.

I looked aroud it minutes ago. This is a Website.
I mean, I've to use it through WebBrowsers.

Question:
Can I use it through SDL Trados Studio 2017 ?

-I just want to read it, not write, change, delete or update something.

"File > Options > TM > Use... > Server-based TM > Select Server-base TM > Servers... > Servers > Add..."

THANKS

  • Hello ,

If you client is asking you to work with WS (worldserver) then you can of course use Stuio 2017.
I believe the normal workflow would be for you to download a .wsxz package and work with their TM's on/offline as required.
The client would provide you with the correct log in details/user profile or project templates.

    Hi Steven Whale
    Thank you for Quick reply.
Yes, I am using SDL Trados Studio 2017 that is not problem at all.

From Today, I'm have wsxz files and make nice projects from it. Good.
Problem is here, its project (resides within my computer) has lots of TMs but most of thme are empty.
Client says, Go to SDL WorldServer and chek TMs out.
-Actually, I'm sub_sub_worker, I do not have any direct contact from them and direct informations too.
I just, ONLY, received WebSite address, ID and Password.

    Question.

(How) Can I use TMs in SDL WorldServer, I'm not working on(within) it.
I just check out the records of them, sentences and words.

I do not want to navigate that tedious WebBrowers only to find out sentences and words.
SDL Trados Studio has nice TM/concordance handling process, why do I have to use WebBrowsers ?

    Thank You.

  • Hello Hoon Kim (HoonKim),

There are a couple of issues here.

Your ability to use any resources within WorldServer (WS), depend on the access rights you have been given.

If you have taken on work as a sub-sub contractor-

    Unknown said:
-Actually, I'm sub_sub_worker, I do not have any direct contact from them

then you (or the person you have sub-contracted from) may NOT have been given these rights by the corporate client.

Even though you can log into the portal- you will only have the assigned rights given by the corporate Project manager.

The corporate client using WS may have assigned only-

    1) access to the whole project, or 2) restricted access to just the files (proof reading) without read/write access rights to the TM's.

    The following quote-

    Unknown said:
its project (resides within my computer) has lots of TMs but most of thme are empty.

may indeed indicate the client has not provided the TM's for you to use and expects you to populate the empty TM and return that to them.

If you are expected to work online (real time collaboration) then this must be done online of course (via the browser) and you WILL need a Studio Express license (only available via the corporate client). SDL Studio 2017 Freelance/Starter cannot be used for online WS projects.

You should really clarify the whole work process and what is required from your client and adhere to the parameters of what has been requested as any workaround is highly likely to fail or to cause unnecessary problems.

    Thanks

    Good, long and detailed explanations.

Sorry, I am not so clear yet.

I am not working on (within) Online WS projects.

I am working with SDL Trados Studio Freelancer on my desk (search, compare and Editing).

It (WS projects ? or not I dot know) is there already

-looks like there are no projects within it.

-it has only TMs and TBs

    You are saying

"SDL Studio 2017 Freelance/Starter cannot be used for online WS projects."

    For me, it is wrong.

I, surely, can visit there, navigated there, find there see there.

    My work flow is simple.

    1. I receive "FooBoo.wsxz"

    2. I make project with SDL Trados Studio Freelancer

    3. Now I have lots of TMs and TBs but,

their total items are about 100 - because, the original client made it on purpose. (for instance I got 10 TMs, 9 of them are empty, the last(or first) TM has around 100 items. That's their routine)

    4. While I doing my job, I Must visit SDL WorldServer, search and confirm terms and sentences using WebBrowsers.

** this step is tedious, inconvenient and SDL WorldServer is S.L.O.W **

    5. I finish my project.

    6. I send my result to the guy(lady) only target ".sdlxliff"s - not whole project or  return-package but only the sdlxliffs.

    That's it.

    Question

Can I possibly find and see WS' TMs and TB using SDL Trados Studio ?

    If possible, How ?

What do I have to ask them ? to go through this window ?? (I think I already have ID and password )

    THANKS

  • Hello @Hoon Kim,

As the processes involved working with WS can be a little complicated and I think there is much room for misunderstanding in this forum, I have been in contact with our Korean team and organised a direct contact person for you.

    Please contact ---
    Mr KounKee Kwak kk.kwak@sdl.com
I have passed on your details as well to my colleague who will explain everything to you.

  • Sorry to reply to this so late, but this is a topic that i became quite familiar with a few years ago.

You can indeed connect Trados Studio directly to a WS instance but it is a little unintuitive to do so. Additionally, Trados currently uses an API that is slow to access these TM's when there are many of them in the WS instance or when leveraging larger segments.

Our organization is working with SDL to use a newer API that they already have available in WS 11.2+ but as you do not control the WS instance this may not be an option for you.

There also is functionality in WS to allow you to download a wsxz file that already has the links to the WS TM's online but that is something that the WS client would need to make available to you. This same feature area also allows you to get both the links and the offline TM's and the WS client can specify which one is the default. Again however, since you do not have control of that, the only readily available option is the process i describe below.

Adding a WS TM to a project is not something that you do from the File -> Setup menu, rather you have to do it at a project level or as the default project settings.

The operations for doing it only on a project or on all projects is essentially the same the only difference is the beginning portion.

To set a WS for all projects, you start by clicking File -> Options

To do it only for a specific project, you select that project and then click the project settings button.

After that, the process is the same:

    • Click the 'language pairs' option in the left column
    • select 'all language pairs' (or if you desire you can do just a specific language pair)
    • under this, now click the 'translation memories and automated translations' option
    • now in the main right area click the 'Use' button
    • In the dropdown select the 'SDL Worldserver Translation Memory' option
    • Here you should be able to use the url and credentials you have to set up the TM's
      • This is dependent on whether or not your WS client allows programmatic access (this is controled separately from UI access) as well as your rights (which from above seem to be in place)

Now as for terminology, this unfortunately is not something that SDL has provided direct access to on a WS instance. They do allow you to connect to language cloud or a multiterm server, but it does not sound like that is relevant to you.

The only terminology that you can get in trados that comes from WS is the terminology that comes down when you export a wszx.

    Hope this helps.

    I appreciated your big help.

    My result : none.

But, I had good time because of you.

    Thanks.

  • try replacing the ws/login with ws/services in the url

if that doesn't work and the WS client is on 11.x (which is possible due to the fact that the WS address has sdlproducts in it, which means it's likely hosted by SDL and therefore updated as new versions come out)

try replacing it with ws-legacy/services instead.
