Hello, I am having issues with the word count working with idml and pdf files.

Question

I have the same file in idml and in pdf (that I also converted in word because the segments are much more manageable but that's an other story) and the word count is completely different. For the exact same file, Idml in Trados gives 2413 and the pdf 2258. The difference is not huge but it's a very large project and on the long run, it makes a really big difference.

Just another reason why PDF files are not suitable for translation! You would need to look at the files closely to find the actual differences but I would say the IDML is the more accurate and is the file you should be translating anyway. The PDF is handy for reference but shuld not be used for translation, especially if you have the proper source file. 
 
If you're really interested then split the files down and test each chunk until you have something small enough to be able to find the difference.
