XML files

Question

I have not worked with xml files in Trados 2017 before. A client has sent a file and I have no idea where or how to start. :( I checked my Settings and all the xml file types are selected. When I create a project, I get all the code and it's difficult to find the 'text' that needs translations. Any suggestions (steps) you have would really be appreciated. Also, how do I do a word count in an xml file that excludes all the code? Thanks.
