Hi Jerzy Czopik,

if you have activated the “Skip tracking and kerning” option, yes, you are right, this will interfere with Character and/or Paragraph InDesign styles which may deliberately contain particular spacing and kerning, and this may generate “problems” when saving back the IDML file.

But this same option works also on isolated/manual character spacing and kerning applied by the designer/typesetter to a portion of text inside a paragraph to fit it in a prearranged text frame and avoiding the presence of too many tags inside the SDLXLIFF file (Editor view).

The solution I may suggest, if you have a version of Adobe InDesign (e.g. 2015, 2017 or 2018) installed on your machine(s), is to copy all Paragraph and Character styles from the originally received file to the target translated file generated after having completed the translation in Studio (Adobe InDesign commands “Load Paragraph Styles… / “Load Character Styles…” / “Load All Text Styles… of Character Styles or Paragraph Styles pop-up submenus):

selecting the original received IDML file and, if you want, the Paragraph/Character styles you want to transfer.

This will apply the original Paragraph/Character styles with the same name to the target Paragraph/Character styles InDesign document. But in this case, you will also copy the Language settings and all other settings applied to the Paragraph/Character styles which may be different in the target document, and you must fix it in the target document.

In this way you will restore all spacing and kerning present in the original Paragraph/Character styles (but not those pertaining isolated/manual character spacing and kerning applied by the designer/typesetter to a portion of text) and your customer will not have to face the problem you pointed out.
