Trados Report word count much higher than MS Word

Hi There,

I work with trados 2017 and i'm very confused beacuse usually the trados word count is always a bit higher then MS word count. But recently the opposite is true.

And difference is very, very high since it can go up to 20%. I use Office365.

Anyone can help me?

Thanks,

  • Hi Giulio ()

I have performed a test creating two projects based the same source Word document, the first with an existing memory with the default TM wordcount settings and the second with a new TM.

In this new TM, I changed these settings:

Trados Studio new translation memory settings with default TM wordcount settings unchecked.

    to these:

Trados Studio new translation memory settings with changed TM wordcount settings unchecked.

These second settings produced a higher wordcount on the same document.

    Here's the Word wordcount:

Microsoft Word document word count statistics showing 4,396 words and 23,382 characters without spaces.

Now here's the Studio wordcount with the default TM wordcount settings (a higher wordcount than Word):

Trados Studio project word count with default TM settings showing 4,572 words for a .sdlxliff file.

Here's the count based on the new TM with the changed wordcount settings:

Trados Studio project word count with changed TM settings showing 4,610 words for a .sdlxliff file.

Not a huge amount more but it shows that the wordcount settings in the TM do affect the wordcount of a file.

This is not really an answer why you've experienced the strangely low wordcount in Studio but it does demonstrate how wordcount settings can be changed and influenced.

You could increase your wordcount if you want to by creating a new TM with those boxes unticked. You could export the TM that you were using to tmx then import that into your new TM.

Probably not much use to you but I thought it would be interesting to investigate.

    All the best,

    Ali :)
