FIVE LANGUAGES MAXIMUM??

 Hi there,

I was using the trial version and I could choose countless languages. Then when I eventually decide to buy my first licence... Guess what? I can only work with five languages. I usually use a couple of them but sometimes I need more...!!! Can anyone please explain what to do? I found something about uninstalling and installing again but I refuse to believe this is the only option we are left with. Will I need to uninstall and install every week? We are buying a licence PER SOFTWARE not PER LANGUAGES...

Please help!

Thank you.

  • Hi ,

I'm sorry you were disappointed with this limitation, but please bare in mind that the free trial is the equivalent of the Professional Freelance version, which has no limitation regarding the languages used. However, the Freelance edition is limited to 5 languages to work with and combine as you wish.

To get to best results you have to select all 5 languages from the beginning of the installation; if you fail to do so, I'm afraid the fastest workaround is to run a Studio repair, from your Control Panel>All programs>Uninstall a program, then highlight/click right on SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 and choose Repair. This will reset your Studio and you can then choose the 5 languages you want.

An alternative to this would be to upgrade your Freelance to Freelance PLUS, which allows you to install and run Trados on 2 PCs. This way you can have 5 languages on a PC and 5 others on the other PC.

    Hope it helps!

  • Thank you for your reply. This is quite tricky and it does not make any sense. According to the info, you could use up to 5 languages simultaneously and I understood it would be 5 languages for the same project as the Professional version is targeted at agencies. I am never using 5 languages simultaneously as I mainly translate to Spanish but I can translate from very similar languages into Spanish (EN, IT, FR, PT, Galician and Catalan). A normal limitation would be maybe to translate INTO maximum X languages, but not FROM x languages as some languages are VERY similar. The professional version is not for freelancers as it is way too expensive in comparison to any other tools in the market. Also, I don't own another PC and thus the Freelance plus version cannot be used either.

  • Hello M

I am sorry if there is any misunderstanding when it comes to the language restrictions within the FREELANCE version.

The Studio freelance version does not discriminate between source and target languages in anyway-it is simply limited to 5 languages in total and any combination of of the five you need.

Generally the Freelance version and the 5 language limit has proven more than sufficient for the vast majority of users over the years, but very occasionally this may not be case and additional languages maybe required.

Of course we (SDL) will always try and provide flexible solutions to individual situations should 'out of the box' solutions not work for you.

Therefore if you are a freelance translator, please feel free to get in contact with me directly (swhale@sdl.com) and we can discuss what options maybe available.
