Auto-substitution of dates: date format

Running Studio 2017 SR1 under Windows 10.

 

I'm trying to set the date format under to d MMMM yyyy. My current text has literally hundreds of dates, and it would be so much easier to be able to auto-substitute them, but that's only of use if the format is correct in English!

 

Under

Options>Language Pairs>French (Switzerland)->English (Canada)>Translation Memory and Automated Translation>Auto-substitution>Dates and Times>Long date

I see only the following four options:

 

MMMM d, yyyy

dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy

MMMM-dd-yy

d-MMMM-yy

 

... and this despite the fact that in Control Panel>Region my Format is set to English (Canada) and my Long date format to d MMMM yyyy.

 

And just to be sure, I rebooted my computer after making that change.

 

What can I do to get d MMMM yyyy as an option under Options?

 

I'd be happy to go off and tinker with an XML file or registry entry if necessary, but haven't worked out where these settings are stored.

    Are you able to post a screen shot of what you are seeing please? and also can you confirm you have the MS language packs installed that match the languages you have set in Studio please.

    Hi Steven,

    When I choose English>French, here's what I see:

    If I add the combination English->German and select that, then obviously I see what you show in your screenshot, because Studio bases that picklist on the locale of the target language:

    Here are the choices that Windows offers me in Control Panel -- which include the format I want, but only because I added it manually; it's not one of the default Windows date formats for English(Canada).

    I added the d MMMM yyyy format to the English(Canada) locale myself, because out of the box, Windows only offers the other the four choices for that locale. Studio is continuing to offer me only the four "out of the box" formats, excluding the one I added.

    So it looks like Studio only consults the list of standard date formats for a locale, not the formats that are currently available for that format in Windows, which strikes me as a bug rather than a feature!

     

    And yes, I do have the language resources installed for all the languages I'm using in Studio.

    I suppose that the answer will be "it was designed to work like this, i.e. it's not seen as a bug since it 'works as designed'"... no matter how bad the design is... :-\

    On the other hand, it makes sense to support (and push for!) standardized date/time formats, regardless of client's requirements, in most cases driven rather by ignorance than any good reasons.
    I.e. if target language has internationally standardized date format, the dates should be written using that standardized format in the first place.

    EDIT:
    Did you configure the custom date format BEFORE launching Studio (or did you RESTART Studio after configuring it)?
    The thing is that applications usually read such info from system only when they start, i.e. won't reflect changes done while they are already running.
    Still, it's not sure if Studio reads that info at all...

    Hi Evzen,

    Thanks for getting back to me. I suspect this wasn't a carefully thought-out design decision. It was perhaps easier to code this way or else the programmer didn't realise that you have to go somewhere else in Windows to pick up any customized date formats a user may have created for a locale.

    As for the choice of formats ... there isn't really a standard for English. Most Brits would write 25 December 2018, but The Guardian would write December 25, 2018 and many others would write 25th December 2018. This client has a Style Guide that specifies 25 December 2018.
    And since I helped to update the Style Guide when I worked there, I can hardly criticise that :-)

    As you might expect, I've restarted not only Studio but also my PC several times during this whole process.

    Interestingly, despite the format being set "wrong" in Options, I'm now finding that auto-substitution is taking 25 décembre 2018 and turning it into 25 December 2018, so I'm a happy bunny, if a somewhat confused one :-/
