Cannot open idml files in Indesign after translation

Hello,

One of our clients regularly sends us idml files to translate. For years everything worked fine, but since a few month they have had trouble opening the translated idml (which we can export without a glitch). Here is the error message in InDesign:

Adobe InDesign error message stating 'Cannot open the file Postkarte_B5_1_August_CH_V5_FR.idml'. It suggests that InDesign may not support the file format, a plugin may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.

We have to try several workarounds (reexporting, copying the stories into the source files, exporting from Studio 2015 instead of 2014...), but sometimes it works, and sometimes it does not, so that I have been unable to identify the cause of the problem.

We do not have InDesign, so I cannot test the files myself.

It seems specifically related to this client, since we have had no problems with idml for other ones.

They use InDesign latest version. We use Studio 2014. We bought the 2017, but we have not installed it yet (we are considering changing our computer, so we'd rather wait until it is done).

Does anyone know what the problem could be, and how to solve it?

thanks in advance for your help!

  • Thanks, Steven Whale, for investigating and solving this problem.

Since this might be useful to others, here is the answer:

    Hello Cindy,

I was able to open the package – work with the file and save target as.

File explorer window showing a list of files including one with a red error icon named 'Translation_ID_2011_GL-01.idml'.

However when open the files the following errors popped up-

Creative Cloud error dialog box indicating missing fonts with a warning icon and a 'Find Fonts' button.

After testing the files, it would appear that the IDML was not correctly packaged up from the client end.

The package you received should have contained not just the file but also ‘font and plugin packages’.

Package Summary dialog box with a highlighted section showing errors: 'Fonts: Entire Fonts Missing, 0 Embedded, 0 Incomplete'.

This meant that although you could work (translate) the file in Studio, once you saved the target file, this was ‘corrupt’ as the necessary components/attributes were missing.

I have sent you a link (dropbox) that should allow you now to download the repackaged files etc.

The client will now need to rework the package themselves to incorporate the missing components on their end. There is nothing else you are able to do yourself as you do not have the necessary packages/components.
