Studio 2017 quits abruptly without an error message

Something like this happened to me a few times recently. Is there an error log somewhere on the disk to tell me what exactly happened?

    Hello ,

    Yes you can generate log files when you go to FILE then select 'View Log File'- this may shed some light on the problem.
    Or maybe even the Windows log files and event viewer under Administrative tools.

    Maybe if you could also let us know what you were doing at the time- same action each time the crash occurs?
    Maybe using a plugin/AT/Termbase etc.

    Any bits of information that you can provide might help lead to the source.

    I wasn't doing anything special. I was just going to merge two segments but did not even manage to select both of them on the left side. I found the log. I believe the crash happened at 10.25, and then I restarted Studio at 10.34, and at 10.25 there is a series of entries about something not being found/not existing. Could it be it?

    Which all appear to refer to the command bar, which leads me to believe something has caused a corruption.

    If you were unable to even merge the segments- i would be surprised if this was the actual cause.

    The first and easiest possible solution would be to reset the windows layout -

    If this does not work then maybe a Studio reset is required-

    Just had another one at 16:54. What raises my suspicion are the lines about generating preview,
    while I never actively used the preview feature after the installation of this Studio instance. I must look through the options again.

    I do not want to delete a folder and painstakingly re-enter my settings every time I run into a problem. Clearly Studio is having problems running well on a new computer with an SSD drive (too fast?) and a fast AMD (not Intel) CPU. I disabled the preview feature which I don't use anyway and see if it helps.

    I might try that but I just had another crash. This time clearly on trying to split a segment. I think I am going to blame it on the size of the file that I keep open in the SDL editor - approx. 37000 words, and 11,8 MB on disk. No idea how it is represented in memory.

    Just had another crash. Will try going without terminology this time. But why does the log still show some action pertaining to previews when I disabled the preview tab on the right of the editor grid?

    * These crashes started to appear mostly after I installed Studio 2019, which brought a more up to date .NET framework, and maye there are some conflicts.
    * I edited the termbase that I use in Studio in Multiterm 2019, because Multlterm 2017 had some problems. Could it cause some problems with term recognition in Studio 2017?
    * Could Studio 2017 have problems handling a large SDLXIFF file – approx. 37000 words, and 11,8 MB on disk.
    * is there an option to disable previews permanently, in addition to closing the tab?

    Is it possible that you are not using the same versioning of Studio and MultiTerm together?

    It is essential that you use the same release - ie Studio 2019 and MultiTerm 2019 and don't try to mix the versions as I'm sure you are already know.

    Although the file is quite large- it is not exceptional and I think we would have heard from others if the issue was wide spread.

    Not that I am aware of. Also I do not see how preview would be affecting the file-,

    unless there is maybe a shortcut conflict between e.g. Word/Studio/third party applications.

     

    Whilst you are working without TB, should the issues pop up again, I think we need to return basics again and ensure that all updates are not only downloaded.

    but also properly installed and then the machine properly closed down and rebooted. I would also consider working (offline) and with your AV disabled and ensuring you don't have duplicate AV's running.

    I may have experienced one “stray” crash before updating to Studio 2019. I can't recall any more.

    Do you imply that simply editing a termbase in Multiterm 2019 and then using it in Studio 2017 can cause problems?
    I did not “connect” Multiterm 2019 to Studio 2017, i am not even aware of a way to do that. Is there a method/procedure for doing it? If I did it without knowing, how do I undo it?

    Since then I managed to update Multiterm 2017, opened the “suspect termbase” in it, deleted one entry, and closed the termbase, so I assume that the termbase is “resaved” in Multiterm 2017.

    Does this also mean that I should have separate versions of my termbases for Studio 2017 and Studio 2019?

    I am now working with the termbase disconnected and if no crash happens today (so far, so good) I will try and reconnect the termbase tomorrow.

    I do not use two AVs.
