Please i want to ask about SDL trados 2017. When i upload pdf file for translation, after finish translation and when i want to save the file, can i save it as excel and not as Word format

Save target format in excel

  • No, you only can save it as a docx - a PDF file will be converted in Studio to Word.
And Studio works like this: what goes in, that exactly comes out. So no format changes in Studio.*

When you wish a PDF to Excel conversion, you have to do it outside of Studio, using an OCR program.

*Unless the source is PDF, then the target is Word DOCX. Or when the source is TTX, the target may be TTX itself or the source file the TTX has been created from

  • But in SDL App store I found an application named Export to excel, can this help in saving my files as excel format. Also I want to ask you about the layout of the Invoice. When I upload PDF Invoice, and after translating it, the Word file layout of the invoice is not the same as the original pdf.
  • Hi

The export to excel on the appstore will create an Excel file in the same layout as your SDLXLIFF. So you'll have an excel file with source on the left and target on the right. Is that useful for you? Best thing is just to try it and see.

On the PDF conversion. Jerzy is correct because the format will only be as good as the conversion tool you used to change a PDF to a Word file. One alternative might be to use something like InFix which works a different way. This tool will extract the translatable text to an XML file which you can handle in Studio. Once complete the translated XML can be imported back into the PDF and the original layout of the PDF is unaffected. You may still have to do some editing and InFix can provide a tool for this, because your translated text may be longer than the original for example and it might not fit everywhere it is supposed to be.
