Segments reverted to source after delivery to client

Hi,

Something unpleasant happened to me today that I would like to understand, so that it can be avoided in the future. Here is the problem description:

  • From customer X, I received an XLF file for an editing task de-fr_ch in Studio
  • I checked every segment and made changes to some (not many)
  • Note that I cannot use the preview with XLF files
  • When all segments were checked and confirmed, and after the QA + spellchecker, I used Save Target As to create an XLF for delivery
  • Soon after, the client informed me that the Word file they generated for the end customer contained some German text from the source. I am 100% sure that I had no German text in my target, the spellchecker would have warned me anyway.

Some more useful info:

  • in 2 parts of the generated Word document, the text "Missing" appears, likely an internal string.
  • segments where German text appears were not even changed by me during the editing task
  • once the problem was known, I searched into the project for these wrong texts and did not find any, my project seems fine.

This seems to be a pretty tricky problem, but what I'd like to know is whether I may have done something wrong and/or how can I include an additional step in the QA to avoid garbage in the final file.

Thanks

Philippe

  • Hi

It doesn't sound as though you did anything wrong. If by XLF you meant SDLXLIFF then this can occasionally occur, especially in older versions of Studio... although I have seen this recently from one customer. The solution is normally to see where the text xhanges to source text and copy source to target for a few segments about the problem and try saving again. This does mean you have a few sentences to edit in the target file but it can correct the problem of having large amounts of text in the source language.

If you have correctly handled the file, copied all tags over and translated the entire file then I think this is really a problem the originator of the SDLXLIFF would have to resolve and not you. Probably a problem they should report to support.
