What do different file formats in Trados Studio mean?

Hello,

I want to ask a question about the differences between files with the extension of sdlproj and that with the extension of sdlxliff. After creating a project, files with the two extensions are created. I found that I can open files with those different extensions. My question is that what's the different between those two files and what changes will I make if I make some changes after opening those files?

If you know the answer, please offer me some help. Thx!

  • Hi

SDLPROJ - this is a file containing metadata that tells Studio where to find the files you are working with (SDLXLIFF, SDLTM, SDLTB etc.) and it also contains settings you have made that are relevant to your project only.

SDLXLIFF - this is the bilingual file you are translating. It contains the source text and the target text.

If you create a project in Studio you will get an SDLPROJ. It makes sense to always open the translatable files in your project through the files view in Studio so you don't duplicate the SDLPROJ or find your settings are missing every time you open the SDLXLIFF.
