Error message "languages not supported in this installation" Studio 2017.

 Dear smart people,

I've asked this question a few weeks ago for Studio 2014 and Allison did her best to help me, but ultimately, the issue couldn't be resolved and support wouldn't help because 2014 doesn't get support anymore.

I now want to use the starter version of Studio 2017 while SDL gets around to implementing 2019 (which I have bought, but not yet installed). This was the advice I got from the project managers at SDL so I can continue working for them.

Today is the first day I wanted to use the 2017 version and guess what? Same error message. It says that the packet could not be opened because it contains languages not configured in this installation. I don't know what my original 2014-set up was, but the 2014 on this PC and the 2017 starter version both have English US among the 5 languages and that's the language of the file/packet.

As far as I can tell, I have deleted every trace of Studio 2014 from this PC, so I don't know where this error message is coming from. And I have no clue how to solve it. And a deadline.

Can anybody help, please?

Thanks SO much!

  • Hi

Awaiting the advice of the smart people [;)] I wonder if this workaround will solve your immediate problem...

Have you ever used the trial version of Studio on your current PC to its expiry?

If not, you can install Studio 2019 as a trial, i.e. a normal download & install without a license, and use it until its trial period runs out - the advantage of this is that during its trial period only, it works as the PRO version which accepts any language or language variant on the whole list...

    Just a thought...

    All the best,

    Ali

    Edited for clarity...

  • Hi Alison,

you are one of the smart people I meant. Just to clarifiy that!

Do you mean on the new PC? I can't use the 2019 version as the files I get from SDL to translate don't support that yet. It has to be 2017 or below. Which is why I activated the 2017 starter version.

Or do you mean trying to, in addition to the starter version on the new PC, get the 30 days version of 2017 from their website (according to customer service, it is there somewhere (According to someone else I spoke with, 2017 cannot be found anywhere anymore).

I just don't get why I get the same error message. Could it have something to do with Windows 10?

ETA: Do you know whether I can have more than one version of Studio on the same PC. Eg not delete 2014 and add the trial version of 2017? Or do they "speak" with each other?

  • Hi Nicola

Good question... I'm not sure of the answer.

I don't know if it is possible to revert to the trial version after entering your license code but you could try just releasing it on your Account Licenses page, here:

Account Licenses page showing a single user license for SDL Trados Studio 2017 with a warning message 'Can't have starter and professional active'.

The above is explained more fully here: reset Single User license for 2015/7

That may revert it to Trial but I can't find out whether it will or not. So, try it and see...

You can't have 2 versions of Studio 2017 on one PC so if the above doesn't work, you could contact Livechat and ask if they can do it...

To save you looking back, here's how:

You can contact the SDL licensing help team free of charge online, here:

    Here's how it looks:
SDL Trados support page with options to 'Submit Case' or 'Request License Reset'.
Click on 'Request License Reset' and a live chat form should pop up, through which you can give details and someone will chat with you live.
If for any reason that doesn't happen, click on 'Submit Case' and a longer form will pop up. Fill out all the details, selecting 'Licensing' at the 'Case type' line and giving your email address accurately as this is how you will be contacted.

If they cannot do this they may tell you that you would have to uninstall your 'starter version' of 2017 totally, first deactivating your license. You can do this from within Studio via Help>Product Activation(highlighted below)>Deactivate. The Help tab, from where you can also access your SDL account pages looks like this:

Trados Studio Help tab highlighting 'Product Activation' and 'SDL Accounts' options.

Then, if you haven't used any version of Studio as a trial already on your new PC, you can install Studio 2017 as a trial... I believe.

It is still totally possible to download Studio 2017 from your SDL account downloads page via the link on your Help tab>SDL Accounts(highlighted above)>Licenses

If you select Studio 2017 in the Filter by dropdown, it will list just SDL Trados 2017 products.

SDL Account Downloads page with a filter set to 'SDL Trados Studio 2017' showing available downloads.

I presume you will see 'SDL Trados Studio 2017 Starter Version' rather than Professional but, I believe, if you install it without the license it will run for 30 days as a trial of the Professional version, after which you'll have to enter your license number again and it will revert to being just the Starter version. As far as I know, all the downloads are the same but your license denotes which level of functionality you have the right to use.

I may be wrong...  am I??

I answered this because today's a bank holiday in GB and thus most British folk more knowledgeable than I may not be working and thus see your request... If anyone out there knows better than me, feel free to help Nicola now...

    All the best,

    Ali

  • Hi Alison,

thank your for your extensive reply (I also forgot about the bank holiday, bummer...). I'll read again and see what I need to do to get a working version of any Studio.

I meant having Studio 2014 and Studio 2017 on the same PC, though.

I also have a problem with Multiterm on my old PC (which is why I decided to give up on figuring out why it won't run on the new PC) that I will try to get resolved in a different post so I can at least use 2014 on the old PC until a tech guru comes and magically makes it all work.
  • Hi again Nicola,

Ah, then maybe the lengthy explanation was not necessary.

You can have one instance each of Studio 2014, Studio 2017 AND Studio 2019 installed on the same PC no problem, any version (I won't complicate matters by adding exceptions to this rule).
Just not two instances of the same year even if they are different 'versions' (i.e. Pro, Freelance or Starter, or indeed Trial)

So, you can indeed "not delete 2014 and add the trial version of 2017"

I missed that final question in your first post. I thought that you'd already installed Studio 2017...

So, just try installing Studio 2017 for the first time on whichever PC you haven't installed it on before and don't activate it with a licence key.

    All the best,
    Ali

PS has this problem only occurred once or does it happen with every file?

PPS I won't get involved with your other post as the MultiTerm issue may be due to a bug that is quite separate from the languages problem you're having...

  • HI again ,

I thought I should just say that the bank holiday will not prevent liveagentlicensing being available, there is usually someone there 24/7 either straight away or within a day.

    All the best,

    Ali

  • Hi Alison,

    thank you again.

It happens with every file on the new PC. Unfortunately, I have already activated the starter version.

But I see whether I can find the 30 day version somewhere on SDL's website to download on my old PC.

And - nothing against your excellent and useful advice - that a tech person sees this and can help me. My deadline is tomorrow morning and right now, I'm improvising - largely due to the Termbase issue, though.

I found an older thread () where someone from France had the same issue but didn't report back whether the solution worked. The advice they got was that the issue was with the file (that the person creating the file picked a sub-category of a language instead of the main).

According to the package reader, that's not the case with this file, but what do I know.

    Nicola

  • Hello ,

I am aware of the importance of you needing to install the 2017 version rather than 2019 at this time.

The first thing I would like to ask is whether you have followed the steps and reset your Studio application as explained in the above thread-
    community.sdl.com/.../18369

You can perform a full reset using the following free app - making sure that you install the five International languages needed.
    appstore.sdl.com/.../

You could also send me the file (swhale@sdl.com) TM etc. if you would like and i can have a look at this for you.
