Hi,
I've acted as the project Manager for the localisation of some resource files we are using in a small piece of development. The final Spanish translation has had to be abbreviated to fit into some of the locations it's needed and this has raised some interesting debate. Here's an example of an English sentence:
Before conversion, a backup of the TM will be made.
The original Spanish translation was this which followed the way it seems to be done throughout the existing software:
Antes de la conversión, se ejecutará una copia de seguridad de la memoria de traducción.
But this was too long and we needed to abbreviate "memoria de traducción". This led to a debate over these:
Antes de la conversión, se ejecutará una copia de seguridad de la TM.
Antes de la conversión, se ejecutará una copia de seguridad de la MT.
So I looked at a number of places in other locations and find things like this:
Pero la mayor adición al software de Word Magic es la inclusión de la Memoria de Traducción o Translation Memory (TM).
Estos programas guardan esos segmentos en un archivo aparte, denominado "memoria de traducción" o TM (translation memory).
But then I look at something like wikipedia in an article on “Memoria de traducción” and it’s all “MT”:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memoria_de_traducci%C3%B3n
And this one where it says “TA o MT” for machine translation:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traducci%C3%B3n_autom%C3%A1tica
Then I looked at our localised getting started documentation included with Studio. In there we didn’t abbreviate “Memoria de Traducción” at all! But I did find one single reference referring to the English “MT” as “MT”! Even the name in the product title was lengthened:
I think the point I’m getting to is that there seems to be no definite right or wrong way to write the abbreviation and we seem to have avoided this at all costs. So maybe I should use this... just kidding!
Antes de la conversión, se ejecutará una copia de seguridad de la TM o MT.
As we have plenty of native Spanish speakers here, what would you prefer to see as the abbreviation for "memoria de traducción"?
Thanks
