Help on using RegEx to create placeholder tags for the Xliff file type in Studio 2017

I have a client who's got some xliffs that they made themselves. Structurally they're fine, but for ease of translation I wanted to have certain content come in as placeholder tags.

I've attempted to set up rules for this using RegEx, but it's not working. I tested the RegEx itself with an online tool, and it appears to be sound, so chances are I'm putting the wrong things in the wrong place, using a different RegEx library, or just generally being a massive dolt. But I don't know which.

I'm attaching a screenshot which shows how I set the xliff up, and examples of a couple of the bits in the editor that I was hoping to capture but without success.

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a list of files with 'Test batch (GenericText.xliff)' highlighted, and a 'Tag definition rules' panel with an incorrect RegEx expression '($A-Z)' highlighted in red indicating an error.

Any clues gratefully received.
