Exchanging project files between Studio on windows desktop and on windows VM under parallels (on macbook)

Hi colleagues,

Does anyone have suggestions on how to set up and run SDL Studio (Plus, i.e. I have two installations) correctly on a virtual machine using Parallels so that I can open project files on both my windows desktop and on my macbook (at different times, that is). I use Dropbox to sync files between my desktop and macbook.

So far I have been able to use SDL on my macbook, but I am running into problems with directory differences due to drive letter C (desktop) and Z, Y or X on Parallels. I have made this work and opened the project nn.sdlproj but going back and forth between the two devices means that I have to redefine the location of my TM's and dictionaries due to the path differences (C:\mydirectory vs X:\mydirectory), which are of course defined in the project settings. I don't have a good grasp of how Parallels works at this point, and they don't seem to be of much help either. They told me to make sure Parallels Toolbox is installed correctly, and I don't understand what that has to do with my problem, so I thought I'd rather ask user experts.

I am running into the same problem for TO3000 by the way. This software uses the public folder (documents\AIT) by default for all their database files and settings. AIT support suggests that I put the Dropbox folder in the public folder on the C drive, along with all my (confidential) client files, but I doubt that is a good solution.

I greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to make SDL fully work without any hassle going back and forth between the two devices.

Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi Stefan,

Do you use a macbook with parallels or a windows based notebook? I would have to look into having all my files on an external drive, but I'd rather not (I recently ruined one I was using for Time Machine because I picked up my mbp and forgot about the drive). I have had some issues both windows and mac recognizing the same drive. I would also still need a backup of that external drive.
I like Dropbox for hassle-free backup and syncing. I am considering getting their business account. This is GDPR compliant and allows multiple accounts. This way I believe I could get a separate account to sync the public folder. Or I may look into options with Google drive, but any other suggestions are still appreciated.

Many thanks for your reply, Stefan.
