Hi Bruce,

Tag duplication happens when an inline tag pair is placed across multiple segments.

For example,

Source:

Go to <b>Trados Store here: https://www.sdl.com/</b>

Translation:

Go to <b>Trados Store here:</b> <b>https://www.sdl.com/</b>

2 segments:

Go to <b>Trados Store here:</b>

<b>https://www.sdl.com/</b>

The problem here is that the problem tags are bookmark tags and they are numbered.

Only one bookmark "217" tag is allowed, but Studio has created two of them, one in the segment itself and one in the content following the segment.

(Take another look at the screenshot in my original post. The second bookmark "217" tag is not even shown unless you filter on "All content".)

It is clearly a bug and since no one has mentioned encountering it, I guess it is an unknown bug.

Yes, I agree with you. My understanding is that the behavior of inline tags being duplicated is just something Studio does, however getting error messages while saving target should not be the side effect of this behavior.

It might be an idea to send your reproducible document to Paul (pfilkin@sdl.com) and he will be able to confirm whether there is already a defect logged and if so, defect ID. Would it be possible to create a very small portion of your document which can be used to reproduce the error and send it to Paul?

The screenshot clearly shows the duplicate tags in the content between segments, so I think I will just leave it at that.

Judging from the earsplitting silence this is a "once in a blue moon" occurrence anyway.

Just another Studio bug that will not be dealt with.

Maybe... maybe not.  I have asked the question because I was unable to find an existing bug logged for this problem.  If we have one I'll tell you what it is.

Unfortunately I cannot disclose the contents of the file.

I did, however, do some more checking. The sdlxliff file sent by the client does not have the problem of duplicate tags.

It turns out that the problem occurred when I merged two segments.

Here is what the source segments looked like before the merge:

Note that there is one "<bookmarkstart id=217 ...>" tag in the inter-segment content before segment 586 and one "<bookmarkend id=217 ...>" tag in the inter-segment content after segment 586

After merging segments 585 and 586, I have the following:

Note that there are now two bookmarkstart and bookmarkend tags, one pair in segment 585 and one pair in the inter-segment content after segment 585.

As you guessed, this is a problem with using the wrong docx file type.

I output the original source file from Studio and created my own sdlxliff file.

The problem DID occur when I merged the segments in this file.

However, when I opened the original source file and saved it again (thereby updating the docx format of the file) the problem did NOT occur when I merged the segments.

So, when using the Microsoft Word 2007-2016 file type, the problem DID occur with the original source file (in the original format), but did NOT occur when the file format was updated.

I then went to the Project Settings -> File Types, unchecked the Microsoft Word 2007-2016 file type and selected the Microsoft Word 2007-2013 file type.

When I added the file this time, the problem did NOT occur with the original source file.

So, when using the Microsoft Word 2007-2013 file type, the problem did NOT occur with the original source file (in the original format).
