Impossible to install SDL Trados 2019 after electricity cut (Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable - Error number 1603)

Hello, I was trying to install SDL Trados 2019 and everything was fine... the installer was progressing fine and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable installed successfully... however... in the next step of the installation process, I suffered a temporary electricity cut due a thunderstorm.

When I turned on my computer, Windows started fine and everything was fine.

I tried to uninstall SDL Trados 2019, because the installation was not completed, so I found in the installed programs list, that it was listed (although it was not installed completely), so I uninstalled it successfully.

Everything seems to be fine... however the problem start when I try to install SDL Trados 2019 again...

When I run the installer as administrator... everything is fine... however the installation process cannot continue because the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable, cannot be installed.

It says exactly the following:

Installing Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable (x86) 14.13.26020
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package
'vc_runtimeMinimum_x86.msi' in the box below

Use source:
C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{BBF2AC74-720C-3CB3-8291-5E34039232FA}v14.0.24215\packages\vcRuntimeMinimum_x86\

I tried to found the file... vcRuntimeMinimum_x86.msi in the C:\ProgramData\Package Cache folder... and I found several folders containing this file vcRuntimeMinimum_x86.msi, I tried to provide the installer the path of every folder, however, when I press okay... I get an error and the installation does not continue... it says exactly this:

The file 'C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{BBF2AC74-720C-3CB3-8291-5E34039232FA}v14.0.24215\packages\vcRuntimeMinimum_x86\vcRuntimeMinimum_x86.msi' is not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft Visual C++2015 x86 Minimum Runtime - 14.0.24215.
Try to find the installation package 'vc_runtimeMinimum_x86.msi' in a folder from which you can install Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x86 Minimum Runtime - 14.0.24215

Setup did not complete. The error is:
Package 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable' could not be installed.
Error number 1603

How may I solve this problem?

Perhaps should I remove Trados 2019 with an special uninstaller to clean everything and start from scratch?

Cheers

  • Hi

I wouldn't use any "special uninstallers" but it is worth trying again. I'd clean up like this this:

    1. Uninstall Studio
    2. Uninstall MultiTerm

Now manually delete these folders if they are still there (back up your TMs, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries and Projects first in case you make a mistake):

    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLTradosStudio2019\
    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLMultiTermDesktop2019\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio15\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2019\Project Templates\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2019\Projects\projects.xml

I think that's about it for a clean install. Then reinstall.

If you still have problems after this I'd recommend you log a ticket with support so an engineer can look at this for you. This is clearly an installation problems and for licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

  • Sadly that do not solve the problem. I can open a ticket, but I would like the solution be posted here, so other users won't have to open a ticket.
Seems to be that in the first installation attempt, Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable was installed successfully.
After this, I suffered the electricity cut, and the installation stopped.
What happened seems to be is that, when trying to install Trados again, it tries to re-install Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable and because it is already present in the system, you cannot re-install it and you get the error number 1603. The installation stops, and Trados 2019 cannot be installed.
A clearner tool to remove all the SDL Trados 2019 components would solve the problem, without making your department has to deal with these installation problems, which takes time and reduce productivity on real issues.
I have asked to Microsoft to deal with this problem, but they did not reply back yet.
In a perfect world installing software always works fine.
However, in the real world... the electricity cuts when you suffer a hurricane (we suffered Leslie hurricane last days), the laptop stop to work because it freezes... or simply the battery is exhausted and the laptop shut down automatically.
It should not be so easy to destroy the installation of a brand new product like SDL Trados 2019.
The installer should be intelligent enough to detect an installation problem, and apply the solution.

  • It’s only a computer ;-)

There is a cleanup tool on the AppStore called Freshstart. But given your problem I thought it might be easier to do this manually.

I agree with your idea of sharing the resolution... please post it when you get sorted out.

  • Sorry? That mean just an user is not important for you? Aha. All computers should be important for you.

Anyway, NO, it is not a computer. Every computer in this world, which interrupt the install process of SDL Trados 2019 due any external issue (electricity cut, low battery, computer freeze, -humor note- kid playing with the dog and the dog suddenly unplug the PC when running, whatever it be...) if the installation process of SDL Trados 2019 is interrupted by any external factor, any computer in this world would be able to reinstall the software again, because Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable will fail, and you will get an Error number 1603.

In my opinion this shows that the installer is not a robust and consistent installer (it is a botch, sorry) because all the installers must face those situations, an unsucessfull installation due any external issue and the possibility to re-install again the software.

What kind of software do not allow you to re-install it, if the first installation attempt fails? Any. Normally all the software allow you to tackle a re-install process.

I have been talking directly with Microsoft regarding the error 1603 and they told me that:
*** Microsoft Customer Service - MSFT CSG *** As per as to my knowledge, this error should be related to the specific configuration of your software. Since our forum focus on VS IDE issue.

You tell me there is an App called Freshstart? but you have to pay for it, or is it free? Because all companies offer the clean-up utilities for free.

Personal Opinion: When the companies are big, and the employees get paid, many times people tend to think that money is like a fruit you can find in the trees. It has different colors and tastes, according to the number on it. Basically, it is something magic that falls from the sky. No sales are involved, or happy customers, money is like the "manna", it comes magically every month.

    Cruel world: It is not.

When a product has a failure it affect the sales of the product. If someone is using Trados 2017 (which is very similar to Trados 2019) and if that person find that the installer is a botch, and it's impossible to reinstall the software after a given problem, that person will continue using Trados 2017.
If someone new to the program, has the same problem... and cannot install it... probably will continue with Trados 2017 or switch to MemoQ, Memsource or just will use Smartcat, which is compatible with Trados, and also you can open your projects there, handle your TM (Translation Memories), and the best thing, FOR FREE, you don't have to pay anything.

Considering the strong competence you have out there, I think that Trados cannot admit installers that are causing troubles to the customers, and as a consequence affecting to the sales and profits of the company.

But as I said, it is just an opinion. Perhaps I am not right, and the money is like the manna, something magic that falls from the sky.

I am sorry for my humor notes, but life's is too hard to take it so seriously. Anyway, for the moment, I will continue with SDL Trados 2017.

    Cheers

  • Hi

I don't think I'll respond to most of this, will just add this:

    1. Freshstart is free. Just go and take a look.
    2. If you still can't help yourself please log a case. That's also free and our support team will help you.

For licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    gateway.sdl.com/liveagentlicensing

    You have two options:

    1. Submit a case using a webform
    2. Use live chat to get a licence reset

You want to use the first option and make sure that you refer to this thread so the teams can see what you have tried already.

  • Thanks for the reply Paul, but the problem is also my time.
Until you release a new version of SDL Trados 2019 with a robust installer, my motto will be SDL Trados 2017 forever.
