Both Studio ad MemoQ already use a vertical interface for translation (Left to right).

Are you trying to move the screens around in Studio? maybe have the preview on the bottom rather than to the right?

Steve, I'm sorry about answering after such a long time. I hadn't seen this until now. 

Thank you very much for your clear and informative answer. What I meant was something different: for me vertical translation would be the possibility to have the target line and the line for translation one below the other so that reading is faster. something like this (picture). Is that possible?

I remember somebody found a workaround for that once (https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/f/studio/21725/top-down-layout-in-trados). It's not out of the box functionality in Studio and to be honest, I never missed it.
