PO files - how to convert target and source text?

Good morning,

We currently have a .po file which we want to translate from Dutch to German.

When we analyse it, Studio fills in the Dutch source text as target. (see image below)

Trados Studio screenshot showing a .po file analysis with Dutch source text incorrectly filled in as the German target text.

How do we switch this?

Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Hi

A PO file is a bilingual format. So Studio will be reading the languages from the file itself. So I'd start the investigation by looking at the contents of the file and make sure that it has been created as you intended. The basic idea is this:

msgid -> contains the source language
msgstr -> contains the target language

  • Hi Paul,

    thanks for the fast reply.
The msgid contains English and the msgstr contains Dutch.
Our customer wants us to translate the Dutch to German. So substitute the target.
    Is that possible?

    Thanks!

  • Hi

The first question would be is the customer expecting a PO file that contains Dutch source and German target, or English source and German target? Really I'd say they should be providing you with the PO file for this.

But if you really want to you could swap the languages using a little regex... but you'd need to check the complexity of the PO file first in case it uses plurals or anything else that might make the switch more complex.

You might also be able to use something like POEdit to do this. I'm sure you can create a different target language using this application but I'm not sure about the source.
